While eager fans anticipate the arrival of the new “Star Trek” series this summer, they’re still yearning for updates on other projects in the pipeline. Following the underwhelming reception of “Section 31”, there’s optimism that the movie branch of the franchise could regain its footing with an origin story hitting theaters. However, at CinemaCon, Paramount remained tight-lipped about the film’s development, a silence that doesn’t surprise many.
At CinemaCon 2024, an unnamed Star Trek production, distinct from the fourth Kelvin franchise film featuring Chris Pine, was revealed, with Toby Haynes of Andor fame set to direct. However, during Paramount’s annual event the following year, there was no mention of this project, which we attended. The news spread rapidly among Star Trek enthusiasts. My sentiments echo those expressed by fans about the original film (and the Kelvin movie) as discussed in @TrekMovie’s comments.

- So the 60th Anniv is going to be another big meh, just like the 50th was. Got it. – @MetalGirlJen
- Big surprise. – @darendoc
- It’s been 9 years, there is no point in bringing the Kelvin-verse crew back for one more film. Recast and reboot. – @KPanOfficial
- It’s dead, Jim. Good riddance to the Kelvinverse. – @kentishsax67
It seems there’s plenty of skepticism and wit around, and I get it too. Yet another Star Trek film’s future is uncertain, a pattern that’s been consistent since the release of Beyond in 2016. Initially scheduled for 2025, there’s been no word on its progress as we kick off the new year. Does this imply we should brace ourselves for not seeing it this year?

As a die-hard Star Trek fan, I found myself questioning the creative direction of the franchise’s films, following the recent announcement that Alex Kurtzman won’t be part of the upcoming plans. It’s intriguing to ponder who is steering the ship now, especially given that the 2025 movie seems to have been put on hold for the time being. Perhaps the decision was made to ensure a prime release slot, but I can’t help but feel a twinge of concern about the future of this beloved series.
One thing I can confidently express is that it’s disappointing, considering how well Star Trek has been performing in the streaming industry recently. However, fans will still get Strange New Worlds, which just unveiled a stunning Season 3 trailer before its resumption this summer. Additionally, there’s an impressive cast lined up for Starfleet Academy. Nevertheless, it would be fantastic if another Trek movie were to grace the cinema screens, particularly following Section 31 being reserved for Paramount+ premiere. Given that an action-thriller featuring a popular Oscar laureate couldn’t secure a cinematic release, one might wonder if there’s any prospect for a Trek production. We can only speculate for now.
Currently, the upcoming “Star Trek” production in line is season 3 of “Strange New Worlds”. It remains to be seen when we might get news about any feature film developments, but I’m hoping it comes our way quicker than later.
