As a lifelong Star Trek fan with a heart full of memories from countless late-night marathons and countless hours spent debating the finer points of warp drive, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia as Lower Decks approaches its final season. The latest clip of D’Vana Tendi amongst the Orion pirates is a delightful taste of what’s to come, and it’s clear that she’s still got her diplomatic skills in full force!
For Star Trek enthusiasts, this summer has been quite lengthy, indeed. The release of the Section 31 trailer and the announcement of major castings in Starfleet Academy were undoubtedly delightful, but I’m eagerly anticipating the return to watching the series itself. Speaking of which, the last season of Lower Decks is almost here, and in celebration of Star Trek Day, Paramount+ unveiled a fresh clip featuring D’Vana Tendi with the Orion pirates. As you can imagine, the scenario unfolded exactly as I had predicted.
As a passionate Trek fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the return of the series on Paramount+, and the recent sneak peek of Tendi leading a pirate raid with the Orions has only heightened my excitement. It was intriguing to ponder how she would adapt to her people’s more aggressive tactics, given her extensive time in Starfleet. However, it comes as no shock that she’s successfully tempered her team and prevented them from resorting to fear-inducing tactics like “taking only one captive alive.” In a diplomatic manner, she even permitted someone to remove their decorative face jewelry. While it’s not flawless, she’s certainly making the best of the situation! Don’t miss out on this clip:
I’m excited to see Tendi with the Orions, but since Lower Decks is wrapping up after Season 5, I can’t help but worry that this isn’t a scene indicating she’ll have lots of time with her Starfleet friends. However, Mike McMahan, the showrunner and creator, mentioned that this season will provide a conclusive ending. So, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that he had a plan in mind, and fans won’t be left feeling let down at the end of this season.
I’m not unduly concerned about it since the video just brims with TNG-era Star Trek references that die-hard fans adore. Plus, I find myself excited that the new season poster seems to draw inspiration from “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier”.
It’s exciting to learn that new episodes of “Star Trek” will be available for streaming soon, but it’s also a mixed feeling because the finale of “LD” marks the end (at least temporarily) of series set in the era of “TNG.” Fans are keeping their hopes high for further announcements about upcoming shows, and Alex Kurtzman hinted that there may be some surprises as more projects get underway.
It has been confirmed that Tawny Newsome, who stars in Lower Decks, will stay connected to the franchise through a new live-action comedy series she’s co-developing with Justin Simien. However, it’s uncertain if other cast members or showrunner Mike McMahan will be as deeply involved. I’d love for the Cerritos crew to keep operating in this universe and make occasional cameos, but at the moment, there isn’t an active TNG-era series being developed. Maybe if Netflix renews Prodigy for a third season, that could change!
But, all that aside, I’m still hyped that we still have one more set of episodes to look forward to before the animated series takes its final bow. With that, the clip of Tendi’s pirating makes me excited for what’s to come. Here’s hoping that the series ends on a high note for her and her allies.
On Thursday, October 24th, you can catch the double premiere of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” on Paramount+, which is available for subscribers. Don’t forget to explore other exciting shows scheduled for television in 2024 as well!
