As a lifelong Trekkie who’s been following the Star Trek saga since I could barely reach the remote control, the news about Star Trek: Section 31 finally getting a release date has me beaming with excitement! The prospect of Michelle Yeoh leading a secret black-ops division in this universe is beyond intriguing.
At last, the much-anticipated movie titled “Star Trek: Section 31” has set a release date on Paramount+. This film will focus on Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), who is summoned to join Starfleet’s covert division, Section 31. Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, who has worked extensively on Star Trek: Discovery, “Star Trek: Section 31” will also feature Omar Hendrick, Sam Richardson, James Hiroyuki Liao, and Robert Kazinsky. Beyond its connections to Star Trek: Discovery, the film will share links with the broader Star Trek universe as Kacey Rohl portrays Rachel Garrett, a character who later becomes captain of the USS Enterprise-C from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that at the New York Comic-Con, it was officially announced through Deadline that “Star Trek: Section 31” will make its grand debut on Paramount+, streaming right here in the U.S. on Friday, January 24, 2025. This film will be accessible to Starfleet commanders around the world, as it will also stream internationally in all markets where Paramount+ is available. Marking a significant milestone for the “Star Trek” franchise, this film will be the first non-theatrically released “Star Trek” movie in its storied history.
The journey of Star Trek: Section 31 has been an extended one. Originally slated as a TV spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, featuring Michelle Yeoh’s character Phillipa Georgiou, production was initially scheduled for May 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed and eventually scrapped. Following this, Michelle Yeoh garnered an Academy Award for Best Actress in Everything Everywhere All At Once. In April 2023, about a month after her victory, Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Section 31 would be revamped from a TV series into a streaming movie.
Boldly Debuting a Star Trek Film on Streaming
Even though Star Trek: Section 31 didn’t make it to theaters, this upcoming movie will be the first Star Trek film in nine years since Star Trek Beyond was released in July 2016. For almost a decade, Paramount has faced challenges trying to launch Star Trek 4, going through various scripts and versions of projects that either continued the characters from the Kelvin timeline or diverged from it. Despite announcing the original cast for the rebooted Star Trek franchise in 2022, there hasn’t been any progress on the next theatrical Star Trek film.
Star Trek: Section 31 is set to premiere a month following the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ five-season run in late December 2024. Meanwhile, it’s expected that the next season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will air during summer 2025, following the pattern of its previous seasons. This leaves room for Section 31 to take over as the new addition in Paramount+’s Star Trek lineup in between shows. Interestingly, Star Trek: Section 31 will mark a milestone as the first streaming film for the franchise, given that Paramount has moved other planned streaming releases like Smile and Mean Girls to theaters. Some speculate if this could also signify the end of the Star Trek series as we know it.
