For any ardent Star Trek enthusiast who’s pondered over the franchise’s most formidable adversaries, it’s likely that Khan Noonien Singh is one of the characters that quickly pop into your mind, possibly even as the top choice. Portrayed unforgettably by Ricardo Montalbán in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Space Seed” and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and later by Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek Into Darkness, this villain consistently posed a significant threat to the crew of the USS Enterprise led by Captain James T. Kirk across various timelines. Prepare for Khan to once again claim attention, so to speak, as he’s set to be at the center of an intriguing sci-fi tale, with some notable science fiction actors attached to it.
Two months following the inclusion of “The Wrath of Khan” into the National Film Registry, marking it as the first “Star Trek” movie to receive this distinction, CBS Studios has revealed its cast for the upcoming scripted audio series “Star Trek: Khan“. Naveen Andrews, known for his role in “Lost”, will voice the title character Khan, while Wrenn Schmidt from “For All Mankind” will lend her voice to Marla McGivers, the Enterprise’s historian who developed feelings for Khan in “Space Seed” and subsequently joined him in exile on Ceti Alpha V. Further cast members for this series will be announced at a later date.
Beyond his role as Sayid Jarrah on “Lost”, Andrews has also acted in various genres, such as Jafar in “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” and Jonas Maliki in “Sense8”. Currently, Schmidt can be seen on Apple TV+ as Margo Madison in “For All Mankind”, and she is also known for her work on “Boardwalk Empire”, “Person of Interest”, and “The Americans”. I’m excited to see how these actors perform in their roles as Khan and McGivers, let’s hope it doesn’t stop them from appearing in potential future “Star Trek” TV series if the chance arises.
In the primary Star Trek universe, the story of “Star Trek: Khan” will explore the aftermath of events on Ceti Alpha V, a planet where Captain Kirk left Khan Noonien Singh, Dr. McGivers, and their followers after their failed attempt to seize the Enterprise. Tragically, Ceti Alpha V transformed into an apocalyptic wasteland following the explosion of neighboring planet Ceti Alpha VI. Furthermore, Dr. McGivers had already perished before the superhumans from the Eugenics Wars (now occurring in the 21st century due to “Strange New Worlds”) were finally able to break free from their exile. This audio series will shed light on Khan’s quest for vengeance as depicted in the 1982 Star Trek film. As per the official plot summary of “Star Trek: Khan,” the story revolves around Khan’s pursuit of retribution against Captain Kirk and the Federation.
Originally depicted as a ruthless antagonist, Khan Noonien Singh was born from an unsuccessful attempt to enhance human capabilities through genetic manipulation. His desire for revenge against Captain James T. Kirk resulted in catastrophic events and sorrow. However, the true tale of Khan has been hidden under the sands of Ceti Alpha V for far too long. Intrigued by this mystery, we will soon uncover the entire story of Khan Noonien Singh in STAR TREK: KHAN, revealing how he transitioned from a benevolent dictator and brilliant visionary on the brink of a utopia to the infamous villain known today.
The movie titled “Star Trek: Khan” is set to arrive on popular podcast services at a later point this year. In the interim, consider activating your Paramount+ membership to catch up on various “Star Trek” films and series, such as the newly released “Section 31“.
