Star Trek’s Michael Dorn And His Next Generation Co-Stars Were Paid Enough So They ‘Couldn’t Say No’ To Picard Season 3, But There’s A More Important Reason Why He Reprised Worf

As a die-hard Star Trek fan with over three decades of loyalty under my belt, I can confidently say that Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard was nothing short of phenomenal. The reunion of the original Next Generation cast was truly a sight for sore eyes, and it was especially heartening to see Michael Dorn return as Worf.

In the first two seasons of “Star Trek: Picard,” there were plenty of familiar faces from “The Next Generation” sharing screen time with Patrick Stewart. However, Season 3 stood out uniquely. With the exception of Will Wheaton, who made a brief appearance as Wesley Crusher in the Season 2 finale and later recurred in “Prodigy” Season 2, all main cast members from “The Next Generation” appeared together in the Paramount+ exclusive series during its final season last year. Michael Dorn, who played Worf, has recently shared that although financial considerations played a role, there was another significant factor that needed to be addressed for him to reprise his character.

During a chat on “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum,” Dorn reminisced about his lengthy stint as the Klingon Starfleet officer, a character who has featured in more “Star Trek” episodes than any other. When asked by Rosenbaum what persuaded him and his “Next Generation” colleagues to reunite for “Picard,” Dorn replied:

As a gamer, I couldn’t refuse when they offered me the opportunity – not that I would have anyway, given it wasn’t an astronomical sum but still appealing. The role they proposed was intriguing, and I was determined to ensure it didn’t become just a static character standing stoically. I needed my character to have depth, an arc that would make the audience invested in his journey. Thankfully, they granted my request, and the experience was nothing short of fantastic. Working with Michelle Hurd was a delight; we had a great rapport and enjoyed our time together immensely. All in all, it was a wonderful project to be part of.

Star Trek’s Michael Dorn And His Next Generation Co-Stars Were Paid Enough So They ‘Couldn’t Say No’ To Picard Season 3, But There’s A More Important Reason Why He Reprised Worf

It was revealed that Michael Dorn, who played Worf in Star Trek’s Deep Space Nine and Picard, proposed a scenario where Worf would attempt to kill a well-liked character from Deep Space Nine during Picard’s third season. I’m relieved that this plot point didn’t materialize.

Michael Dorn, the actor who plays Worf in Star Trek, didn’t fully commit to reprising his role for Picard Season 3 until just before filming began.

It’s important to note that money is often a factor in an actor’s decision to accept or continue a role, as they need to earn a living like everyone else. Therefore, Michael Dorn was open to the idea of being offered an attractive sum, but for him to reprise his role as Worf on screen since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis, a paycheck alone wouldn’t be enough. He also required Worf to have a captivating personal journey within the main Picard storyline, where these characters are engaging with the Changelings.

The idea they presented seemed fitting for Dorn. While there wasn’t much exploration of Worf’s history on Deep Space Nine in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, he had noticeably softened over the years since his last appearance, and now appreciated pastimes like tea drinking and meditation. In this phase of his life, Worf was serving as a Starfleet subcontractor with the rank of Captain, and he spent time with Michelle Hurd’s character Raffi Musiker before reuniting with Jean-Luc Picard, William Riker, Beverly Crusher, Data, Geordi LaForge, and Deanna Troi. Additionally, a hint was given that something transpired on the Enterprise-E during Worf’s command; however, he asserted that whatever occurred wasn’t his responsibility.

The television series “Star Trek: Picard” has concluded, and although some fans have voiced their desire for the potential “Legacy” spinoff to delve further into that period of the franchise, no definitive decision has been made yet. Regardless, there are several new “Star Trek” TV shows on the horizon, such as the final season of “Lower Decks,” set to debut on October 24 in the year 2024.
