As a long-time Trekkie who grew up in Montreal, I can’t help but feel a special connection to this beloved universe and its Canadian roots. From the iconic Captain Kirk played by William Shatner to Elias Toufexis, an actor who not only shares my hometown but also graced our screens as L’ak in Star Trek: Discovery, it feels like a dream come true.
It’s clear that Star Trek originates from America, but if someone argued it was a Canadian export, I’d be open to their perspective. In fact, several past and future Star Trek productions have been shot in Canada, and many Canadian actors have significantly contributed to the franchise’s success. Elias Toufexis, who plays L’ak on Discovery, is one of these talented Canadians. Recently, he spoke about his surprising connection with another notable figure in the series, William Shatner.
Toufexis generously chatted with TopMob for an interview, focusing on the upcoming launches of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 – available digitally on August 26th and physically on August 27th. During our conversation, we delved into Canada’s impact on the franchise. While it’s common knowledge that Shatner is one of the most iconic Canadian actors in the series, Toufexis revealed an intriguing tidbit I hadn’t heard before:
Canada has undeniably played a significant role, especially when it comes to the iconic character of Captain Kirk in Star Trek. In fact, Captain Kirk was portrayed by William Shatner, who lived on the same street as I did, albeit three decades before me. I’ve always been impressed by him, not just for his acting prowess, but also because of our shared hometown connection. So, whenever I see him at events like Comic Cons, we often discuss and reminisce about Montreal. It’s a wonderful experience.
People who follow Elias Toufexis on social media are aware that he is a big enthusiast of Star Trek, specifically the original series. However, it becomes more understandable when you realize that the actor lived on the same street as his childhood idol William Shatner. I wholeheartedly enjoy the journey that led him to join the franchise not just once but twice. For those less familiar with his other roles outside of L’ak, watch Season 1’s “Context Is For Kings” by subscribing to Paramount+.
Star Trek: Discovery’s Wilson Cruz Feels There’s More To Hugh Culber’s Story, So We Discussed Whether It Could Continue In Starfleet Academy
I want to see more of Culber.
Elias Toufexis is distinguished as the first Breen character revealed and depicted in “Star Trek.” Although he was delighted with his role, there were some hurdles. For instance, it’s understandable that he might have preferred L’ak to survive instead of perishing in “Erigah,” yet he did commend his death scene. Nevertheless, who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to be part of the “Starfleet Academy” cast, another series set in the 32nd century?
Hey there, it’s amazing how this actor has landed two roles in Star Trek so far. Who knows, maybe he could grab a third role in a future series! I for one would be thrilled if that happened, given my admiration for anyone who truly appreciates the franchise and gets to work within it. After all, why should we doubt someone who shared the same neighborhood as William Shatner and looked up to him throughout his life? He’s earned every chance to explore the final frontier in Star Trek!
“You can stream ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ on Paramount+ right now! Don’t forget to keep an eye out for Season 5, which will be available both digitally and physically starting August 26th and 27th. Since we don’t have any new ‘Trek’ episodes at the moment, this could be a great opportunity for you to check out the TV schedule for 2024 and see what exciting shows are planned for the fall season.”
