It’s hard to accept that it’s been 20 years since the release of “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith“. Back then, people thought they might never get another chance to watch a Star Wars movie in a theater, making it an unforgettable experience for many fans. However, there’s now an entire generation who have only seen Revenge of the Sith on their TV screens. As a 1997 re-release Star Wars trailer puts it, “If you’ve only seen it this way, you haven’t truly experienced it.
Initially, “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” premiered on May 19, 2005. However, Lucasfilm and Disney have chosen the last weekend in April for its limited re-release. This timing serves as a tranquil period before the summer movie season’s intense activity kicks off. Notably, this same weekend will see the debut of movies like “Until Dawn,” “The Accountant 2,” and “The Legend of Ochi.” Additionally, Disney is planning to launch the summer movie season with “Thunderbolts” a week later. This decision might disappoint fans anticipating a May the Fourth theater experience for “Revenge of the Sith,” as they had hoped. However, Disney aims to avoid clashing the “Star Wars” re-release with “Thunderbolts.
April Is Going To Be a Busy Month for ‘Star Wars’ Fans
It seems that April 2025 is shaping up to be an exceptionally action-packed month for Star Wars enthusiasts! The annual Star Wars Celebration is set to occur in Tokyo from April 18th to 20th, with fans eagerly anticipating significant updates, such as potential confirmation of the recent rumor that Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s president, might be stepping down. Furthermore, on April 22nd, the second season of Andor will premiere on Disney+, unveiling its first three episodes. To add to the excitement, Revenge of the Sith will return to theaters only three days after the debut of Andor Season 2 on Disney+, ensuring that Star Wars devotees will have a wealth of content to immerse themselves in.
2025 marks the 20th and 10th anniversary respectively of “Revenge of the Sith” and “The Force Awakens,” two iconic films in the “Star Wars” franchise. To date, there are no plans to re-screen these movies in theaters. Considering its release month, it seems more appropriate for “The Force Awakens” to be re-released during fall or holiday season, as it originally premiered in December 2015.
However, given its relatively recent release compared to “Revenge of the Sith,” it might not be an immediate choice for Disney to re-release “The Force Awakens” in theaters yet, as it hasn’t had the time to develop the same level of generational nostalgia that “Revenge of the Sith” has.
The re-screening of “Revenge of the Sith” will undoubtedly keep fans excited until 2026, when “Star Wars” returns to theaters with “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” the latest film in the franchise since “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019.
