Star Wars Movie from Taika Waititi Gets Confusing Update

Star Wars Movie from Taika Waititi Gets Confusing Update

As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast who has weathered the highs and lows of this iconic franchise for decades, I find myself growing increasingly skeptical with each new project announcement that never seems to materialize. The latest development regarding Taika Waititi‘s potential Star Wars film is just another nail in the coffin, as the director’s recent remarks only serve to further cloud its status.

In May 2020, it became known that director Taika Waititi was working on a new “Star Wars” film, following the success of “Thor: Ragnarok.” Waititi has teased a fresh perspective for the space saga, hinting at some grand ideas he’s been developing. But since then, there have been many questions about the progress of his movie. In a recent conversation, Waititi didn’t provide any clarity on the status of his “Star Wars” project, instead adding to the uncertainty and making it seem even less likely that we’ll see it in the future.

A project that remains stuck in a state of indefinite delay for four years often doesn’t manage to escape the development stage, and when speaking with The Playlist, Waititi didn’t provide a definitive update on whether the film is still under active development or not. When questioned about the project, he simply stated:

“What has ever existed? What is death? Well, death can be seen as a fresh chance. Another phase of life to expand and prosper. Everything is constantly evolving. My suggestion for any filmmaker would be, ‘Always say yes to everything.’ Because, you see, things change and vanish. And it’s hard to tell what stage they are at. I’ve been involved with projects that seemed dead for three years only to resurface again. I find myself thinking, ‘I thought that project was over. Now I have to work on it once more.’

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that the progress on this particular project seems to be on hold, neither advancing nor moving backward officially. Since my Star Wars film was first announced, I’ve been involved with other projects like Thor: Love and Thunder and Next Goal Wins. Although I’m part of the Star Wars family through my voice role in The Mandalorian as IG-11, it remains uncertain if I’ll be stepping into the director’s chair for a future Star Wars film.

Lucasfilm has a history of revealing Star Wars projects only for them to encounter setbacks or get scrapped. Since the last time the iconic Star Wars crawl graced the big screen, Rian Johnson’s proposed trilogy continues to linger in uncertainty, Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron film has seen multiple cancellations and revivals, while other esteemed directors like Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Shawn Levy, Donald and Stephen Glover, and Dave Filoni, have been associated with Star Wars projects that are largely still awaiting any substantial news.

More recently, Simon Kinberg, known for his work on X-Men, has joined the list of directors working on Star Wars films, planning a new trilogy that could potentially revolve around Daisy Ridley’s character Rey Skywalker. While such a significant announcement would have sparked great anticipation in the past, current dissatisfaction with Star Wars content and the pattern of announced but unrealized projects makes it challenging for fans to fully engage with new developments.
