‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith’ Rerelease Tops ‘Accountant 2’ With $3.4M in Box Office Previews

Talk about a blast from the past.

The re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith by Lucasfilm and Disney for their 20th anniversary grossed an impressive $3.4 million during its Thursday previews, outperforming the $2.5 million preview earnings of Ben Affleck’s latest action-thriller, The Accountant 2 (the $2.5 million includes revenue from “tax day” screenings held on April 15).

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, re-released by Lucasfilm and Disney for their 20th anniversary, generated a substantial $3.4 million in Thursday previews, outdoing the $2.5 million made during previews for Ben Affleck’s new action-thriller The Accountant 2 (the $2.5 million includes revenue from “tax day” screenings held on April 15).

If “Revenge of the Sith” demonstrates incredible power, the weekend box office competition might become a three-cornered fight instead of a simple battle between Warner Bros.’ “Sinners” and Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2”, with each predicted to earn around $20 million to $25 million.

If “Revenge of the Sith” shows extraordinary strength, the weekend might see a three-way battle for dominance instead of just a two-film contest between Warner Bros.’ “Sinners” and Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2”, both expected to earn $20 million to $25 million.

If “Revenge of the Sith” proves to be a force to reckon with, the weekend’s box office could become a three-horse race instead of just a two-movie competition between Warner Bros.’ “Sinners” and Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2”, both projected to earn $20 million to $25 million.

In May 2024, the re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace brought in $8.7 million on its opening weekend, and in late April 2023, the re-release of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi earned $5.1 million. Neither film had preview screenings. The main question now is how frontloaded the Sith release might be; one industry executive even speculates that it could potentially earn as much as $20 million.

Many believe that “Ryan Sinners” will outperform initial predictions and continue to lead the box office with over $30 million. Boasting near-perfect audience ratings and some of the best reviews in Ryan Coogler’s already illustrious career, “Sinners” has become an exceptional film that sparks endless conversations at water coolers everywhere.

On Thursday, the team from “Sinners” outperformed their opponents with a substantial earnings of $6.1 million, bringing their seven-day domestic total to an impressive $77.5 million. The spooky period vampire movie featuring Michael B. Jordan had a stronger than anticipated opening over Easter weekend, earning $48 million and dethroning Warner Bros.’ other event picture, “A Minecraft Movie.” For two consecutive weekends, “Sinners” reigned supreme at the box office.

In 2016, the initial release of “Accountant,” distributed by Warners, earned a box office total of $24.7 million. It later amassed a global revenue of $155.5 million, ultimately claiming the title of the most-rented digital film in 2017, as reported by Amazon MGM.

In their reunion, directors Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck, the duo behind The Accountant 2, have garnered a new, favorable 76% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This is quite an improvement compared to the 53% rotten score of the original film. Interestingly, audiences seem to be more captivated by the sequel, as indicated by its impressive 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at present.

Affleck co-produced the sequel through Artists Equity, which he shares with Matt Damon, along with Lynette Howell Taylor’s 51 Entertainment and Mark Williams’ Zero Gravity Management. The movie recently had its global debut at SXSW, taking home the Audience Award for the Headliners category.

In the film titled “Accountant 2“, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, and J.K. Simmons join forces as co-stars. The plot revolves around Ben Affleck’s character being compelled to intervene in the murder of an old friend, with assistance from his estranged brother and a U.S. Treasury agent. As they delve deeper, they uncover a lethal conspiracy, placing themselves squarely in the crosshairs of a merciless network of assassins determined to protect their hidden secrets at all costs.

Both Accountant 2 and Sinners carry a mature rating and will go head-to-head with Revenge of the Sith for male viewers’ interest. However, Revenge of the Sith holds an edge since it appeals to families as well.

On its opening night, the latest horror collaboration between Screen Gem and Sony, titled Until Dawn, earned approximately one million dollars. This modest debut is projected to result in a weekend box office take within the low digits. The film carries an R rating.
