As a long-time Star Wars fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming Disney+ series “Skeleton Crew.” With Jude Law joining the cast as a Jedi, and Lee Isaac Chung, the talented director behind “Minari” and “The Mandalorian,” on board to helm an episode, this show is shaping up to be something truly special.

The upcoming live action Star Wars series titled “Skeleton Crew” on Disney+, which hasn’t been released yet this year, has received a positive endorsement from esteemed director Lee Isaac Chung. In an exclusive chat with the Inside Total Film Podcast, Chung (known for his work on “Twisters”) shared insights about his role in the production and his appreciation for co-creator Jon Watts’ unique vision for the series.

Chung received two Academy Award nominations for his 2020 creation, “Minari,” in the categories of Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. After that, he directed an episode for the third season of “The Mandalorian.” His most recent project, the sequel/reboot named “Twisters,” has received impressive critiques, and his upcoming directorial venture is an installment of “Skeleton Crew,” featuring Jude Law (“Sherlock Holmes”). This series, which centers around a group of children, is characterized as an adventurous coming-of-age story. Chung anticipates that this program will captivate families, offering them a compelling narrative – something the recent Star Wars installments haven’t managed to achieve in a while.

I genuinely believe that the show will deeply resonate with families and inspire them to engage with it extensively.

Chung is set to join an esteemed group of directors for Marvel’s upcoming series, with Jon Watts (MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy) and Jon Favreau (The Mandalorian) serving as executive producers. Directing episodes are David Lowery (The Green Knight, Pete’s Dragon), Jake Schreier (Beef, Marvel’s Thunderbolts), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Mandalorian), and the award-winning duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once). Chung expressed admiration for Watts’ vision for the show, which he believes will be a significant draw.

I’m excited for people to check out this project. It carries a distinctive Jon Watts touch, making it an ideal fit for anyone who appreciates his unique storytelling and ability to portray childlike perspectives in a captivating way. Through this production set in the Star Wars universe, Watts showcases his knack for bringing such beauty to youthful stories.

Chung expressed his excitement about the unique idea and talented cast behind the show, which ultimately led him to accept the directing role. Amidst criticisms of lackluster storytelling and excessive fan service in recent “Star Wars” productions, Chung’s optimism provides a glimmer of hope for disenchanted fans. He shared:

I’ve been in this industry for quite some time now, and I’ve seen my fair share of scripts and designs. But when I came across what he was creating, I was taken aback. The excitement was palpable as he asked if I would join him on this project. With the brilliant minds of Jude and the exceptional cast we had assembled, it was an easy decision for me. The energy on set was infectious, and the kids were a delight to work with. Their talent and enthusiasm made every day a pleasure.

As an avid fan, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the upcoming “Skeleton Crew” series from Lucasfilm. To my surprise, there hasn’t been much news about it lately. We were given a sneak peek of its plot last year, and here’s how I understand it: In the first installment, I’ll join four kids on their seemingly secure home planet as they stumble upon an intriguing discovery. Before they know it, they find themselves lost in a peculiar and perilous galaxy. Their journey back home won’t be an easy one; they’ll encounter unexpected allies and adversaries along the way. The adventure they embark on will be far more exhilarating than they ever imagined.

Alongside Jude Law, who is set to portray a Jedi, the ensemble comprises Kerry Condon from “Better Call Saul,” who characterizes the show as “innocent, playful, and charming.” In addition, Tunde Adebimpe of “Twisters” joins the crew. The motley team of children is represented by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers. Jaleel White, previously known for his role in “Family Matters,” will also feature in the cast, portraying a pirate.
