Reflecting on Pharrell Williams’ remarkable journey through life, I am nothing short of astounded by his unparalleled influence and impact on culture. From music to fashion, and everything in between, he has defied societal norms and expectations, carving out a trailblazing path for multi-hyphenate creatives everywhere.
Through a fresh collaboration with Pharrell Williams, the LEGO Group has solidified its position as a cultural icon. Given that creativity through play is central to their philosophy, Pharrell’s creative spirit, illustrious career, and diverse talents fit harmoniously with their legacy, making this partnership seem like it was destined to happen.
The “Over the Moon” collection, drawing inspiration from the expansive creativity found in space-themed work, introduces itself as a model rocket and an inclusive “Phriends” calculator, both made with LEGO® pieces, featuring dual-sided LEGO heads to symbolize people from all walks of life.
After Jean-Jacques Ndjoli from Paris showcases his dynamic style, TopMob visits New York to connect with Keith Herron, the creator of fashion brand Advisry – a standout luxury streetwear label hailing from the city.
Blending his background from the West Coast with his contemporary style in New York City, Herron talks about Williams’ impact, the principles of Advisry, and his career as they construct the “Over the Moon” set for the second installment of Stargazers.
“To me, various art forms are like diverse languages, each conveying a unique, creative viewpoint from the artist who expresses themselves through it.
Herron was attracted to the sense of community in streetwear fashion, and this inspired him greatly by the groundbreaking brands from the 2000s and 2010s. As a self-taught designer, he experimented with different software programs during his adolescence, honing his skills while also developing his unique aesthetic. Eventually, he launched Advisry based on this inspiration.
In the early stages of his brand, Herron looked up to Pharrell Williams and Nigo as his key inspirations from the early 2000s. When people asked who his favorite designer was, he’d reply with Pharrell, leaving some perplexed due to his role as a music producer. Now that Pharrell is the creative director of one of the world’s most prominent fashion houses, it all seems perfectly logical to everyone.
As a creative hailing from California, now based in New York, I’ve always been drawn to blending the unique styles of both coasts. My goal was to bring the effortless coolness of Cali fashion into the high-fashion scene of NYC, where people wear their bold pieces even to the grocery store. The challenge was to make it comfortable. I like to call it “easy luxury.
He aims to strike a balance between satisfying various taste preferences and catering to the active, mobile lifestyles of artists, similar to himself. This goal manifests in three aspects:
In his main avenue of expression, Herron explores a versatile path within the arts. While clothing design serves as his primary outlet, he also delves into alternative mediums to quench his creative thirst. Originally dabbling in filmmaking, he perceives this art form not as distinct but rather as a unique perspective of the same artistic message as fashion, stating, “I see all art mediums as diverse expressions of the same underlying theme, and that theme is the unique, artistic viewpoint of its creator.
As a creative enthusiast, I’d say my mindset is all about breaking free from confines to spark unbridled innovation, just like Herron does. In his own words, “eliminating limitations” is where all his ingenious ideas begin. He’s always open to new adventures, experiences, and the fresh ideas that come with them, which have led him to create designs that know no bounds. By embracing a wide array of perspectives across various disciplines as potential sources of inspiration for his work, Herron has catapulted Advisry into one of the most thrilling brands in recent years.
His impact paves the way for versatile artists and individuals who aspire to transcend societal expectations and excel beyond the roles assigned to them.
Just as Ndjoli emphasizes, the spark of curiosity paves the way for reaching a desired goal. As he puts it, “This perspective is reminiscent of a child’s wonder.” He encourages being inquisitive about everything, regarding it as an exciting period of exploration. Not every attempt will be successful, but the thrill lies in discovering small aspects you appreciate from failures, which can ultimately strengthen your successes.
After concepts are developed and organized, identifying the common ground among various fields becomes a crucial step, and Williams’ career has paved the way for limitless opportunities. “Pharrell’s influence on culture is unprecedented. He stands out as one of the most impactful individuals to ever exist, and his cultural impact surpasses music and fashion.” Such is his achievement that he has scaled the pinnacle of culture. His legacy serves as a trailblazer for multi-talented artists and those who aspire to exceed societal expectations of their roles.
Regarding Williams, I’d say he’s known for his daring nature and innovative ideas. What truly impresses Herron is not just the originality of these ideas, but the careful manner in which they are presented to the public, making them accessible and digestible. This versatile individual has made a mark in music with alternative hip-hop, fashion, collaborations with intellectual heavyweights, and even skincare – all while maintaining a lasting impact. Williams’ success can be attributed to his keen understanding and shaping of cultural trends.
Despite his numerous achievements, they epitomize determination and sticking to one’s principles, and Herron acknowledges that every accomplishment, regardless of its magnitude, doesn’t come without lessons drawn from setbacks. “His path seems to have many bends and it’s always enlightening to observe artists take risks and shift their career paths,” he muses about Williams’ professional journey. “It’s incredibly inspiring to stay true to your unique vision as it could pave the way for a long-lasting career.
Its modular design enables individuals to construct anything they desire, regardless of the guidelines, which I consider an insightful comparison to the flexibility and freedom found in living one’s own life.
Apart from how curiosity stimulates creativity, play also plays a similar role in maintaining an enjoyable creative environment, as exemplified by the LEGO philosophy. As Herron explains, “Art can convey deep messages, but it can also be light-hearted and entertaining, offering a fun and interactive experience for people.” Growing up with and embracing the LEGO brand, he appreciates its modular design that enables individuals to construct whatever they desire, regardless of instructions. This flexibility, in his view, is an apt metaphor for life itself.
As a gamer, I embarked on a creative journey to craft something so out-of-this-world, it could only thrive within this digital realm. It was an adventure that didn’t surprise me in the slightest. After all, it’s the fun factor that truly counts!
Highlighting its diverse and inclusive aspect, Herron commends the “Phriends” abacus feature for promoting inclusivity and acknowledging diversity, saying it appears as though every individual is accounted for within it. What truly captivated the creative is the attention to detail, even extending to small elements like featuring Atlantis Apartments – a building from Williams’ hometown, Virginia – in the spaceship design. Moreover, Herron appreciates how the overall spirit of Williams permeates through the LEGO Group’s unique creation.
