Steam’s userbase has experienced rapid growth over the past few years, with its most recent record for simultaneous users more than doubling the previous high it reached just under five years ago.
On the weekend, Steam surpassed a new record by having a total of 40 million online users. Yesterday, March 2nd, at 2 PM UTC, an impressive 40,263,595 users were logged in simultaneously, although not all of them were actively playing games. According to SteamDB’s chart, the peak was slightly higher at around 40,270,997 concurrent users, with approximately 12,727,475 of those individuals engaged in games at that moment. Nonetheless, this represents a significant number of people.
What stands out most here isn’t just the size of this achievement, but rather how quickly we’ve progressed to reach it. It all started on March 15th, 2020, when Steam surpassed 20 million simultaneous users; at that time, SteamDB speculated that the spike could be due to people staying home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yesterday, however, was an ordinary Sunday, though it followed the release of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, which has been steadily breaking records by attracting over a million concurrent players since its launch on Friday. Additionally, Steam Next Fest was in full swing, meaning many people were likely trying out demos for upcoming games.
It’s clear that these factors have played a role, but achieving an additional 20 million users in under five years is truly impressive – it appears the platform’s expansion shows no signs of abating. Maybe it will even double its user base again within the next five years? No worries, Steam, you’re up to the challenge!
