Stellar Blade’s rumoured PC port sounds like a modding minefield

As a seasoned gamer and critic, I’ve seen it all – from groundbreaking narratives to downright controversial titles. But Shift Up’s Stellar Blade has undeniably left an indelible mark on me, not just for its gameplay or graphics, but for the ensuing debates and controversy surrounding its representation of women.

As someone who has spent a significant amount of time observing and analyzing the gaming industry, I have to admit that I was not surprised by the controversy surrounding Shift Up’s new game, Stellar Blade. With my years of experience in this field, I’ve come to realize that certain games continue to cater to a specific demographic, often objectifying women and reducing them to mere sex symbols.

In 2024, Shift Up’s action-adventure game stands out as one of PlayStation’s major exclusives. After the initial buzz of release subsides, however, there are queries about its future direction. The developers have shared an extensive plan with us, featuring a photo mode, fresh costumes for Eve, and cryptic indications of DLC, along with possible sequels extending past 2024.

As an avid fan following the latest developments on Reddit, I’ve come across an exciting opportunity that might pique your interest. The Shift Up recruitment page is currently seeking applications from individuals with “PC skills design and data work” experience for the role of a Combat Designer. Although it’s not entirely clear which Intellectual Property (IP) this job opening pertains to, the reference to creating battles for “domestically developed AAA console action games” strongly hints at Stellar Blade. So if you harbor a passion for combat design and have the necessary skills, don’t miss out on this chance to contribute to the development of an anticipated AAA console game like Stellar Blade.

Previously this year, Kim Hyung-Tae of Shift Up refused to discuss the possibility of a Stellar Blade PC version due to a “confidential business agreement” with Sony. Considering recent developments, this isn’t surprising. Sony has been gradually releasing PlayStation exclusives like God of War and The Last of Us onto PC, thereby expanding their fanbase significantly.

As an avid fan, I can’t help but imagine the excitement a PC port of Stellar Blade would bring, leading to a thriving modding community. However, I also can’t deny the potential controversy it may stir up. In the past, Stellar Blade unintentionally ignited intense debates on the representation of women in video games. Critics were quick to point out its questionable jiggle physics and marketing tactics that emphasized a provocative nature.

Despite this, the game achieved high ratings among PlayStation exclusives and led sales charts in April. A PC version was expected, but with it comes the possibility of modding, which may exacerbate existing complaints. One enthusiast suggested, “It’s time to prepare NexusMods for investment.”

“Additionally, someone asked, ‘I’m curious about how quickly the modding community will develop for this PC game once it’s launched,’ and another made a humorous comment that LoversLab might experience heavy traffic as a result. A Change.Org petition titled ‘Free Stellar Blade’ now has more than 96,000 signatures, urging the release of an uncensored version of the game.”

Eve has previously tested out more provocative Stellar Blade costumes, and with the game being moddable on PC, we can only anticipate what’s to come. If it follows the trend of games like Final Fantasy or Resident Evil, it’s unlikely that Eve will be dressed for very long.
