As a long-time follower of both Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers, I find their reactions to the 2024 election outcome both hilarious and heartbreaking. Their ability to infuse humor into such a dire situation is nothing short of remarkable.
Late-night talk show hosts, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers, shared their perspectives following Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
On his Instagram post for the Wednesday night episode of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” the host playfully hinted at the content of his opening monologue. Starting off with a humorous exclamation, he says, “Once more, unbelievably, it has occurred! Following an odd and brutal campaign driven by a panicked desire to avoid imprisonment, Donald Trump has secured victory in the 2024 election.
Colbert expressed a profound grief and sorrow, stating, “The magnitude of this distress and despair is immense.” However, he also pointed out the positive perspective: “At least now, there will be a peaceful transition of authority.” In essence, he’s calling Mike Pence to take charge, using a child’s game rhyme, “Mike Pence, come out, come out, wherever you are.” Yesterday, he wore his ‘I Voted’ badge with pride. Today, he donned his ‘Doubting the Essence of Humanity’ badge.
As a late-night show host, I’m often met with the comment, “Don’t you secretly hope Trump wins? He provides you with so much content.” But the truth is, just as no one would assume the janitor secretly enjoys cleaning up after someone with explosive diarrhea because it gives them plenty of work material, I don’t relish in using Trump for my show.

Meyers began his show “Late Night” with some thoughts about the surprising outcome America experienced on Wednesday. He assured his viewers that he had indeed voted for Harris, and said, “I couldn’t sleep as I watched the results roll in, it was like Christmas Eve. You either wake up to find Santa left presents under the tree or left a big mess in your fireplace. If you’re lactose intolerant, avoid the milk, you know.
The host went on to say, “As I watched the results unfold, it became clear I’d be here a little while later for our discussion and I couldn’t help but reflect — sincerely — on how fortunate I am to be in this setting, surrounded by such esteemed colleagues, not feeling isolated. This is a delightful environment to be part of, and we strive to convey that joy to you at home. We won’t let anything dampen that spirit. Even when we discuss matters that aren’t inherently uplifting.
“For instance, I believe Donald Trump isn’t a nice person; in fact, I’d argue he’s not a good one. To clarify, my opinion is based on what I understand about good and bad behavior. It’s important to note that many people see him differently – they view him as a good person or simply don’t mind if he isn’t because they think he’s an effective president, which means he might become our president again in the future. That’s how democracy functions in America, where we are fortunate to reside, even on days like this.
