Taylor Sheridan’s latest Paramount+ original series titled “Landman” has made a significant impact on the streaming scene. Interestingly, a renowned literary figure has expressed admiration for the show, but he seems conflicted about it. On the social media platform Threads, legendary horror author Stephen King confessed his appreciation for Sheridan’s new project. However, there appears to be a part of him that regrets getting so engrossed in this drama revolving around oil rigs, roughnecks, and billionaires. Despite King’s humorous musings about the series, his familiarity with Sheridan’s past works suggests that he appreciates the intriguing characters that the TV writer creates. As King put it in his brief critique:
LANDMAN: I guess I can’t help but admire this, as it exudes a tough, macho vibe, much like THE MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN and YELLOWSTONE. The central character is a problem solver who doesn’t back down, a type of person we all aspire to be. However, Taylor Sheridan skillfully portrays ordinary men in their professional lives, which is commendable. Additionally, the well-placed country music tracks are impressive.
Apart from holding the second position among Paramount+’s top 10 television series and garnering a fourth place ranking in Nielsen ratings, this series amassed over a billion minutes of viewership. The contemporary western, situated amidst oilfields and rugged workers in West Texas, has earned significant praise for its compelling cast of characters, keeping viewers captivated episode after episode.
Taylor Sheridan’s Brand Continues to Prove Popular on the Small Screen
The 10-episode series of “Landman” echoes much of Taylor Sheridan’s previous works, demonstrating his talent for breathing new life into tales set on contemporary frontiers. This suggests that the Western genre will endure as long as it is supported by compelling storytelling. From his groundbreaking work on “Sicario,” which he wrote the script for under Denis Villeneuve, to his co-creation of the hugely successful “Yellowstone” series with John Linson (which spawned numerous spin-offs), Sheridan’s unique narrative style has consistently proven its worth. Stephen King and many other influential voices are among those who appreciate Sheridan’s work.
A well-known figure, Matthew McConaughey, has openly praised Sheridan’s work, particularly the show “Yellowstone.” During an interview with Fox News last year, McConaughey stated his admiration for the show’s straightforwardness. In essence, he believes that “Yellowstone” presents a compelling question: What lengths will men go to defend their land and family when faced with encroachment from the outside world? The cowboy code portrayed in the series makes it easier to recognize wrongdoing than in other contexts. McConaughey admires this clear delineation between right and wrong. Unfortunately, plans for a “Yellowstone” spinoff series that he was rumored to be involved with did not materialize.
In essence, Stephen King and Taylor Sheridan share a common appreciation for portraying “ordinary individuals” in their works, Landman and Yellowstone, respectively. Both authors seem to admire the authenticity of their characters, who are tough yet relatable, stirring interest not only as entertaining figures but also as role models for viewers. Although there is some over-dramatization in the perils faced by certain characters, it’s intriguing to see figures like Kevin Costner’s John Dutton and Billy Bob Thorton’s Tommy Norris handle contemporary life with their stoic, old-fashioned demeanor.
