As a devoted admirer of both Stephen King adaptations and exceptional cast ensembles, I am simply thrilled with the news that Bill Paxton, a seasoned veteran of the silver screen, is joining the already star-studded lineup of “The Running Man.” With his remarkable talent for playing complex characters and delivering captivating performances, it’s safe to say that he will undoubtedly bring an unparalleled energy to this dystopian game show.
Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Stephen King’s work is looking promising, particularly with its impressive cast lineup. Already on board are Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Katy O’Brian, and Lee Pace. Now, rumors suggest that even more prominent actors are set to join the project. The latest talent joining the production is none other than Tyrese Gibson, who starred in Jurassic Park III and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Macy is set to join the expanding cast, playing the role of an individual who assists Powell’s character, Richards, when he goes into hiding. This news follows the announcement from the weekend that Michael Cera will collaborate once more with his Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director for a live-action film, marking their reunion after 14 years.
Cera has signed up alongside Emilia Jones (famous from Locke & Key) for The Running Man, set to begin filming in London by early next year and slated for release on November 21, 2025. This film adaptation of the Stephen King novella is said to be a truer representation compared to the 1987 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In this movie, Powell plays Ben Richards, a troubled individual who takes part in an infamous game show where contestants are hunted by a team for their amusement. The longer one manages to evade capture, the more wealth they accumulate.
14 years have passed since the dynamic duo of Cera and Wright last worked together on a live-action project, which was the 2010 adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series. Despite not performing well at the box office, earning just $51 million against an estimated budget of up to $85 million, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has since developed a devoted following and is now considered a cult classic. Last year, Cera reprised his role in the anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which was produced by Wright, but due to his involvement as an executive producer, there was no direct interaction between the two actors.
Who Is Everyone Playing in The Running Man?
In the movie The Running Man, Cera will be cast as a “greenhorn rebel, eager to aid the struggling man,” while Jones assumes the part of “a pampered woman oblivious to the oppressive nature of the government.” Maria Conchita Alonso originally played this role in the 1987 film, where she acted alongside Schwarzenegger as Amber Mendez. Previously, Cera’s character was portrayed by Marvin J. McIntyre, who brought Harold Weiss to life on screen.
In other locations, Brolin takes on the role of Dan Killian, the game show’s executive producer, whereas O’Brian steps into a contestant position alongside Powell. Pace has joined the cast to portray the leader of the Hunters, an elite group of assassins employed by the Network who are tasked with tracking down and eliminating contestants before the 30-day time limit expires, thereby denying them the chance to win the $1 billion prize.
Before the main filming begins, which is three months off, there’s still ample time for us to cast more characters. We’re looking to fill roles like the rest of the Hunters, as well as some other participants who will act as targets for the killers before they can reach Powell. As news about The Running Man unfolds, we’ll keep you updated with casting updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes images.
