As a seasoned movie buff with a soft spot for horror and a deep appreciation for the masters of the genre, I found myself captivated by the latest offering from filmmaker JT Mollner – Strange Darling. This film is not just a chilling ride, but a clever homage to the classics that came before it, with nods to Duel, Halloween, and Texas Chain Saw Massacre that had me reminiscing like an old-timer at a barn dance.
In an interview, we chatted with filmmaker JT Mollner when his innovative horror-thriller “Strange Darling” was making its debut. Hailing from Miramax, this project sees household name Giovanni Ribisi stepping into the roles of director of photography and producer. Rest assured, though, as the on-screen talent is top-notch, with Willa Fitzgerald (“Reacher”) and Kyle Gallner (“Smile”) taking the lead. Their performances portray a chilling, gory first date that spirals out of control in a way that keeps you guessing until the very end.
Mollner penned the script for “The Long Walk,” a gripping adaptation of Stephen King’s work, in addition to directing it. This highly anticipated project presents a chilling dystopian concept, where participants are forced into a ruthless walking competition. Notable actors like Mark Hamill and Judy Greer have joined the cast. Mollner expressed joy about writing “The Long Walk,” stating that it was a dream job for him as a devoted Stephen King fan. He also praised director Francis Lawrence, expressing that it was an honor to adapt such a book and work with a director of his caliber. Mollner claims that Lawrence described the film as an instant classic.

Strange Darling Features Nods to Duel, Halloween, and More
Beyond its distinctive storyline, exceptional acting, and strategic use of dark wit, Strange Darling also gains strength by paying tribute to classic horror films and aiming to surpass their notable aspects. As Mollner shared, “When the concept for the film first struck me and the narrative took shape in a particular manner, I recognized opportunities to leverage certain tropes while simultaneously subverting audience expectations related to those tropes.” Initially, an opening crawl was planned for the movie, but later on, we invited Jason Patrick to provide narration, evoking John Larroquette’s voiceover from Tobe Hooper’s film [The Texas Chain Saw Massacre].”
“I found it quite enjoyable delving into those classic horror elements during the initial part of our third chapter, drawing inspiration from films like ‘Duel’, ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’, and ‘Halloween’. We presented the familiar horror archetypes and tropes, which was exciting. However, the rest of the movie took a different turn as we began to uncover layers beyond these recognizable aspects.”
For aspiring filmmakers, don’t miss the stunning exterior scenes in the movie “Strange Darling”, particularly the breathtaking color schemes blending with nature. According to Mollner, those shots were his favorites from the film, describing them as “beautiful” and “fairy-tale like”. He shared that capturing such images was a truly rewarding experience, feeling a strong sense of accomplishment when faced with challenging shots. “Strange Darling” is now showing exclusively in cinemas by Miramax.
