Sterling K. Brown’s Heartfelt Scenes in Paradise Reveal a Deep Personal Connection

Have you kept pace with the series titled “Paradise”? In my view, it’s one of Hulu’s top shows on their streaming platform, offering a gripping murder mystery that carries apocalyptic ramifications for our planet, and complex ties among the characters that demand further exploration. Initially, viewers were drawn to “Paradise” due to the reunion of Sterling K. Brown with Dan Fogelman, his collaborator from “This Is Us.” However, what has kept me, and likely many others, captivated are the well-crafted characters that appear in each episode. Their intricate writing and rich personalities make them fascinating even beyond the primary mystery. I continue to watch because I’m invested in where these characters will end up.

To date, the series “Paradise” has aired four out of its eight scheduled episodes for Season 1, leaving me disappointed that my preferred character, Agent Billy Pace (Jon Beavers), met an untimely demise at the end of Episode 4. Reminiscent of “This Is Us,” “Paradise” employs flashbacks to navigate its timeline, leading me to anticipate a return for Billy. This narrative device has also allowed us to understand Sterling K. Brown’s character, Agent Xavier Collins, better, as his father. Initially assigned to the Presidential beat for the Secret Service, Collins failed to protect President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) in the pilot episode. Throughout the first four episodes, we have witnessed Collins make tough decisions, hinting at his unyielding nature. This characteristic is evident in the relationship dynamics between Xavier and his father, yet as Brown shared with us, these scenes resonate on a deeper level.

During a special interview for the “Paradise” press event, we had the good fortune to chat with Sterling K. Brown and James Marsden. I pointed out Xavier’s scenes with his father as strong instances of the deep character development observed in the early part of the series. Brown graciously acknowledged this, and then elaborated:

To begin with, it was truly an honor to engage the talent of Mr. Glynn Turman, whom I’ve long admired in the acting world, to portray my father on set. It was simply fantastic working alongside him, I must admit. Moreover, the scenes between us as father and son hold a special significance since I lost my own father when I was just 10 years old. Therefore, being given the chance to imagine what an adult relationship with a parent might have been like brings me immense happiness.

It came as a surprise to me that Sterling K. Brown experienced the loss of his father at a critical point in his life. Despite being an intriguing actor, it’s fascinating to consider how he can channel real-life emotions into his performances. This skill is evident in many of his standout roles. I was honored when Brown decided to reveal this personal detail during our chat, as it provided greater insight into both the man and the character. To appreciate the connection between Xavier’s relationship with his father, a pilot, and Sterling K. Brown’s own experiences, rewatch Episode 3 of Paradise.

However, these particular episodes made an effort to portray the character of Xavier Collins from the outset of this season, according to Brown’s explanation: his nature, his traits, and who he truly is.

The intricacies of their partnership – these two ambitious men, who excel in their respective fields, yet have contrasting strategies when it comes to certain professional matters. Xavier refuses to compromise his principles, even if it involves compromising his father to some degree. This trait underscores the significance of this character in the world of Paradise, as he won’t turn a blind eye to wrongdoings. He will take a stand and do what he believes is right, disregarding personal repercussions that may come his way.

I’ve had the good fortune to watch most of Season 1 of “Paradise,” and let me tell you, Sterling K. Brown’s character, Xavier Collins, plays a crucial role in unraveling the main mystery that viewers are eager to discover. However, the series isn’t just about the murder of the President or Agent Billy Pace; it also delves into what events occurred on Earth’s surface that forced the remaining population to seek refuge in a mountain range, now their version of paradise.

In Episode 5 of “Paradise,” airing on Hulu next Tuesday, February 11th, we’ll continue our journey. This episode marks a significant step towards the final chapter of the season, which is set to conclude on March 4th.
