As a long-time fan of Steve Martin and his exceptional talent, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia at the thought of him gracing the stage of Saturday Night Live once more. Having grown up watching his hilarious skits and mesmerizing banjo performances, it would be a delight to see him return as the comedic alter ego of Tim Walz, especially given their shared love for live performances with Marty Short.
Steve Martin is being asked to portray Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live, and he’s shared his thoughts on it.
The actor from “The Only Murders in the Building,” who often appears on and even hosts Saturday Night Live, hinted at a potential collaboration, stating on Instagram’s private messaging service Threads, “I just found out that Tim Walz wants to tour with Martin Short.”
Every now and then, my long-time buddy and collaborator on OMITB, plus an SNL veteran like Short, and I team up for live performances. Once, we even captured one of these shows for a 2018 Netflix special named “An Evening You’ll Forget for the Rest of Your Life.” As a gamer, I can say that performing with him is always an unforgettable experience!
Absolutely, Martin and Short are set to perform several live shows across the United States this fall, under the title “The Dukes of Funnytown.”
Martin’s name gained significant popularity on the platform, which used to be known as Twitter, following Harris’ announcement of Minnesota Governor Walz as her vice-presidential pick for her 2024 presidential campaign.
Saturday Night Live (SNL) has brought back alumna Maya Rudolph to portray Kamala Harris up until the 2024 election. Additionally, Damon Lindelof participated by sharing a Photoshopped SNL promotional image featuring Martin and Rudolph as Harris.
Nevertheless, Martin wasn’t the sole candidate proposed for portraying Walz on the extended Saturday variety program.
Apart from X users’ proposals, names like Danny DeVito, Tom Arnold, Bradley Whitford, Jim Gaffigan, ex-cast member of “Parks and Recreation” Jim O’Heir, Bill Murray, Kyle Chandler (possibly influenced by Walz’s past as a high school football coach), Drew Carey, frequent SNL guest star and host John Goodman, SNL alum and former Minnesota Senator Al Franken, and Paul Scheer were mentioned. Additionally, an intriguing suggestion was made for a current SNL cast member to join the team.
SNL alum Julia Sweeney even suggested herself as someone to play Walz.
At the age of 60, Walz served for twelve years in the House of Representatives, earning respect from his colleagues and building solid connections with fellow legislators. In 2018, he went on to become the governor of Minnesota. His casual remark about Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, as “odd,” caught the attention of Harris and other Democratic party members.
As a fervent admirer, I’m excited to share that my beloved former educator and football coach has been instrumental in implementing forward-thinking policies in Minnesota. He’s championed initiatives such as universal school meals and setting a goal for the state to transition entirely to clean energy by 2040. Moreover, he signed into law House File 1989, a measure that resonates with Taylor Swift fans like myself. This legislation aims to enhance transparency and security when purchasing tickets online for concerts, sports events, and live shows in Minnesota. Frustrated by the ticket-buying ordeal during Taylor’s concerts, a local legislator, along with many other fans, pushed for this change.
On Tuesday evening, Harris and Walz publicly debuted as the 2024 Democratic presidential duo for the first time, gracing the stage at a rally held in Philadelphia.
