As a longtime streaming enthusiast and someone who’s witnessed the evolution of this digital entertainment landscape, I must say that the week of July 1-7, 2024, has truly outdone itself! The sheer volume of minutes spent on streaming platforms is nothing short of astonishing. It’s like we’ve collectively decided to hibernate indoors, binge-watching our favorite shows and movies instead of catching some rays.
As a devoted streaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say that no July 4 week has ever been as monumental as this year!
According to Nielsen‘s streaming content ratings, the week from July 1 to July 7 has set a new record as the busiest since they started tracking streaming regularly several years ago. During this period, viewers collectively spent over 313 billion minutes on streaming platforms. For the first time, every title in the top 10 overall watched at least one billion minutes each.
The record-breaking week occurred only seven days ago, as seven out of the top ten overall streamed past the one billion-minute threshold. Moreover, Nielsen reports that July 7 was the fourth-busiest streaming day they’ve ever recorded, trailing behind January 13 (due to a Peacock-exclusive NFL playoff game) and February 17-18 (which coincided with Presidents Day and a nationwide cold snap keeping many indoors).
The movie “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” by Netflix took the lead in the top 10, with a total of 2.05 billion minutes watched since its July 3 release. Meanwhile, “Suits” reentered the top 10 following the debut of its final season on Netflix; last year it was exclusively available on Peacock, but now it has surged back into popularity.
Over the past three weeks, viewings for House of the Dragon peaked at an impressive 1.3 billion minutes on Max, excluding any television viewings on HBO. Meanwhile, Your Honor maintained its summer success with 1.23 billion minutes watched on Netflix and Paramount+. Remarkably, The Bear retained almost all of its audience from the previous week, garnering 1.21 billion minutes on Hulu.
Over the past two Independence Day weeks, I’ve noticed that the most-watched shows have consistently topped the charts with impressive viewership numbers – last year, Suits clocked in at 3.67 billion minutes watched, while Stranger Things broke records with 4.8 billion minutes viewed in 2022. However, neither of these shows could compare to the wide array of blockbuster titles that have graced our screens this year.
Nielsen’s streaming rankings encompass viewing exclusively on television screens and exclude minutes viewed on computers or mobile devices. These ratings solely focus on domestic audiences within the United States, excluding viewers from other countries. Here are the top streaming selections for July 1-7, 2024:
