As a devoted binge-watcher and statistics enthusiast, I must say that the opening week of “Cross” on Prime Video was nothing short of spectacular! With Aldis Hodge portraying the iconic character Alex Cross, it’s no wonder this crime drama has garnered such impressive viewership numbers. The fact that it ranks as Prime Video’s second-best new series debut of 2024 speaks volumes about its quality and appeal to audiences worldwide.
The opening week of Cross was a big one for Prime Video.
On Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the period November 11-17, Amazon’s streamer took the top spot overall with the series ‘Cross’ racking up a total of 1.36 billion minutes viewed. This eight-episode season debuted on November 14 and features Aldis Hodge as the lead character in this crime drama, which is an adaptation of James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels. Notably, ‘Cross’ ranks as Amazon Prime Video’s second-highest debut for a new series in 2024, trailing only behind ‘Fallout’. (Amazon reports that approximately 40 million viewers worldwide have tuned into at least some portion of ‘Cross’ during its initial three weeks of release.)
Following a strong debut, HBO’s DC Comics series The Penguin emerged on Nielsen charts for the week after its finale. Over the course of the week, it garnered 595 million viewing minutes on Max. For most of its run, the show has consistently been just outside the top 10 acquired series. According to Nielsen, The Penguin accumulated a total of 3.8 billion viewing minutes on Max in the eight-plus weeks since its premiere, along with an additional 650 million from linear broadcasts on HBO.
The debut of the streaming show “Deadpool & Wolverine” recorded impressive figures, coming in second position with a watch time of 1.34 billion minutes on Disney+. Previously leading the pack, “Outer Banks“, moved down to third place overall but managed to attract 1.17 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix for the week.
Additionally worth mentioning: The previous seasons of “Yellowstone” (620 million minutes watched on Peacock) reappeared in the rankings following the debut of season 5B on Paramount Network, and Netflix’s festive film “Hot Frosty” (439 million minutes) took third place among movies.
Last week’s Netflix fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson did not appear on the streaming platform’s weekly chart. This is because Netflix boasted about a massive global viewership for the event, but live sports like this one are not included in Nielsen’s streaming charts. Similarly, Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” broadcasts, which typically top the charts, are never included due to their classification as live sports events.
Nielsen’s streaming rankings apply exclusively to viewing on traditional TV screens and do not account for time spent streaming on computers or mobile devices. Furthermore, these ratings only quantify viewership within the United States, neglecting international audiences. Here are the top streaming titles from November 11-17, 2024.
