Streaming Ratings: No Originals Make Overall Top 10 for First Time Ever

As a seasoned gamer and avid streamer with a penchant for fantasy epics and gripping dramas, I find myself constantly on the lookout for the next big thing to consume my precious hours of leisure time. The latest Nielsen streaming rankings have piqued my interest, particularly the continued success of House of the Dragon on Max.

During the initial week of the Olympics, Peacock saw significantly high viewership figures from streaming. However, this was not the case for most other streaming platforms.

For the week of July 29 – August 4, none of the original series or movies landed in the top 10 most-watched titles on Nielsen’s streaming rankings. This is a first instance since the inception of the weekly rankings four years ago, as reported by the ratings service. During this week, viewing levels outside of the Olympics saw a substantial drop according to Nielsen.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but share my excitement over the incredible success of “House of the Dragon” on Max. Given that it’s also aired on HBO, Nielsen classifies it as an acquired series rather than original content. In the recent week leading up to its second season finale, it dominated the viewership charts, amassing a staggering 1.31 billion minutes of viewing time! This figure is a significant leap from the 1.04 billion minutes viewed just a week prior, and it marks the highest viewership of the season yet for this captivating “Game of Thrones” prequel.

Nielsen slightly decreased the total views for ‘HotD’ during the weeks of July 1-7 and July 8-14 because of an issue they referred to as “crediting.” The figures for these weeks have since been revised.

In the past week, only one other show, Bluey (1.17 billion minutes), surpassed the billion-minute threshold. Netflix’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (553 million minutes) was the standout debut among original series. Futurama (320 million) reappeared in the rankings with the premiere of a new season on Hulu.

Back in the mid-2000s, I was deeply immersed in two iconic series – Prison Break and Lost. Now, as a dedicated viewer, I’m thrilled to find that these beloved shows have made their comeback, debuting on Netflix! With 758 million minutes clocked for Prison Break and 678 million for Lost, they’ve managed to secure spots in the top 10 acquired series. Interestingly enough, you can catch them streaming on Hulu as well.

Nielsen’s streaming statistics account for viewing exclusively on television screens, excluding any minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. These ratings solely gauge American audiences, not those from other nations. The top streamed titles during July 29-Aug. 4, 2024 are listed below:
