Stree 2 'gobbled us up', says John Abraham and Sharvari starrer Vedaa's director Nikkhil Advani on clashing with Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao's film

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with years of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that Nikkhil Advani’s candidness and humility in his recent interview are quite refreshing. It takes a true artist to admit that the success or failure of their work can sometimes be influenced by factors beyond their control, such as release date clashes.

On August 15, 2024, three films premiered simultaneously. Among these, the film “Stree 2,” starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, was a massive box office success. However, Akshay Kumar’s “Khel Khel Mein” and John Abraham and Sharvari‘s “Vedaa” did not perform well financially at the cinema. In a recent interview, the director of “Vedaa,” Nikkhil Advani, acknowledged that the simultaneous release had an impact on their film.

In an interview with PTI, Nikkhil shared that the movie “Vedaa” premiered on August 15 alongside “Stree 2,” and it unexpectedly outperformed them. He described it as swallowing them whole. The filmmaker also remembered that four days later someone asked him what he could have altered to make “Vedaa” successful. In response, he suggested that perhaps releasing “Stree 2” wasn’t a great movie could have been the change needed for “Vedaa” to succeed.

Regarding his action-drama production, the director expressed his belief that they had created an excellent movie. He further mentioned that it’s part of his duty to narrate the tale people have given him to tell in the best way possible. “We crafted a truly outstanding film,” Advani remarked, noting that it contains elements capable of leaving viewers spellbound.

In the movie “Kal Ho Naa Ho,” viewers commented that the second half contains more action. However, as he points out, if there had been no action in the film, it would have been a standalone production focusing on Dalit atrocities and rights instead.

Speaking about Amar Kaushik’s horror-comedy film, he finds it remarkable. He believes that after the long COVID-19 lockdown and pandemic, the audience yearns for freedom, for an opportunity to have fun without restraint. Moreover, he highly commended Sharvari’s performance in the movie, calling her ‘incredible’, while praising John’s acting as ‘superb’. Despite many people putting in a lot of effort into the film, he feels sympathetic towards them, rather than himself, since the movie didn’t perform well at the box office.

Simultaneously in his professional life, Nikkhil Advani is preparing for the launch of his upcoming historical drama web series titled “Freedom at Midnight”. This series, which shares its name with a book written by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins, features Sidhant Gupta, Chirag Vohra, and Rajendra Chawla. As per reports, the premiere of this series is scheduled on Sony LIV starting from November 15.
