Street Fighter Live Action Films Finds New Director and Fans Are Excited

As a die-hard Street Fighter enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming movie that will be in the capable hands of director Kitao Sakurai! Currently scheduled for release on March 20, 2026, fingers crossed, this date may change due to potential delays. But until then, let’s keep our fingers crossed and anticipate the action-packed, adrenaline-fueled experience that’s sure to come!

In early 2023, it was announced that the rights for a franchise were acquired by Legendary Pictures, granting them control over both television and film adaptations. Sony Pictures has been chosen as the distributor for these projects. Initially, Danny and Michael Philippou were selected to lead the project, being appointed by the production team.

After achieving success with their independent horror film hit Talk to Me, these Australian filmmakers went on to establish themselves further by launching the RackaRacka YouTube channel. This platform showcased their passion and skill for Street Fighter, as demonstrated in a short film that garnered over 8 million views.

Unfortunately, conflicting schedules forced the duo to withdraw from the project, causing a delay in finding a director for Legendary to proceed. Later, it was officially announced that Kitai Sakurai would take on the role.

In terms of his filmography, this will be Kitao’s third movie, following “Aardvark” released in 2010 and “Bad Trip” on Netflix from 2021. His other credits involve being the executive producer for “The Eric André Show” and producing a TV series based on another video game titled “Twisted Metal”.

Although the director’s resume might not be extensive, there appears to be an overwhelming enthusiasm among fans for the upcoming movie adaptation of Street Fighter, as evidenced by the predominantly positive reactions on social media.

Information about the movie’s production process is quite limited. It’s worth noting that the initial release date, which was announced in June 2024, was pushed back from its original schedule in March 2026. This change came shortly after Legendary and Sony parted ways with the Philippou brothers, who were originally set to direct the film.

There hasn’t been any update or news about the movie, which is concerning given that it’s set to be released in around 13 months.

The upcoming movie will be based on the Capcom IP, with the original Japanese company playing an active role during its production. Although the 90s version of the film holds a special place in fans’ hearts, it was generally panned upon release, despite boasting a high-profile cast that included Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile and Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li. In the original, Chun-Li was portrayed as a reporter, which may be why Capcom is taking a more active role in this new adaptation.

It’s likely that this movie offers engaging crossover material for Street Fighter 6, which has been well-received following the release of its newest DLC character, Mai Shiranui.
