Street Fighter Movie Faces Setback as Mortal Kombat 2 Hype Soars

As a movie enthusiast, let me say that a skillfully crafted movie based on a video game can effortlessly transport you away from the multitude of hastily thrown-together live-action versions out there. For numerous people, 2021’s “Mortal Kombat” was an entertainingly mindless trip to the cinema, and its sequel is eagerly awaited among the most anticipated upcoming video game adaptations. This anticipation is partly fueled by Karl Urban’s debut as Johnny Cage.

Meanwhile, buzz surrounding the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 escalates following the release of its initial images online. Unfortunately, the future of another popular fighting game movie, the Street Fighter remake, has become uncertain. It seems that even promising projects aren’t immune to setbacks, which is always a bit disheartening.

The Street Fighter Remake Just Lost Its Release Date To Another Movie

Although Sony initially planned an early release for Street Fighter, set for March 20, 2026, studio executives seem to have reconsidered their decision. Consequently, the Legendary-distributed project is currently date-less, and it remains uncertain what alternative strategies they will adopt.

This unexpected news about the change in directors for the game adaptation, Kitao Sakurai who was recently announced as director in mid-February, comes as a surprise. He is also involved with the next season of Netflix’s Beef and Daniel Dae Kim’s upcoming streaming series Butterfly.

You Decide!

Mortal Kombat Vs. Street Fighter: Which Bad Video Game Movie Is Better

Earlier, Danny and Michael Philippou were set to direct and produce the film adaptation of Street Fighter, following their successful horror movie Talk to Me. However, they later decided not to move forward with this project. Instead, their next venture will be a horror film titled Bring Her Back, which revolves around pet resurrection.

Currently, it remains unclear as to why Sony decided to postpone the initial release date. Since no actors have been disclosed for the upcoming remake thus far, it could be due to scheduling conflicts with the actors that are hidden from us at this time.

Additionally, it’s important to mention that Sony has changed the release date schedule for Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming shark thriller “Shiver,” initially scheduled for August 1, 2025. The movie will now be screened in theaters approximately a year later on July 3, 2026.

Mortal Kombat 2 Is Definitely Still On The Way

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about Karl Urban reprising his charismatic role as Johnny Cage in “Mortal Kombat 2.” Yes, he’s captivating as Billy Butcher on “The Boys,” but that doesn’t stop me from eagerly anticipating this action-packed sequel. Directed by Simon McQuoid for a second time, and with Jeremy Slater (“The Umbrella Academy”) crafting the script, it looks like we’re in store for another thrilling ride to the big screen this year.

In the realm of cinema, I recently discovered an upcoming film titled “Beyond Urban” that boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Among them are Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, Damon Herriman (who appears twice!), Chin Han, Ludi Lin, Joe Taslim, Hiroiyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, and yet another role by Damon Herriman. This diverse group of talented actors promises an unforgettable cinematic experience!

Mortal Kombat II is set to hit theaters on Friday, October 24, 2025.
