STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN Presents Francesco Balzano's 'INIZIO' Exhibition

As a seasoned art enthusiast with a penchant for the avant-garde and a soft spot for pieces that push boundaries, I can confidently say that Francesco Balzano’s INIZIO exhibition at STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN is an absolute must-see. His mastery of material, form, and concept is truly breathtaking, and the Gilded Age-inspired scenography only serves to heighten the impact of his sculptural works.

To kick off its very first solo showcase, art and design gallery STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN has selected architect and designer Francesco Balzano as the highlighted artist. Back when the gallery began, Balzano’s work was one of the pioneers they represented, and it still forms an essential part of their personal collection.

Under the title INIZIO, this exhibition delves into our understanding of location, origin, and emptiness using two unique collections of limited-edition pieces, accessible only through the New York art gallery. The eye-catching “INIZIO” collection boasts eight imposing sculptures made from hemlock wood, deeply stained almost black, exuding a powerful presence and understated elegance. Meanwhile, the “LOCI” series showcases six intricately designed boxes crafted from soft onyx in shades of white, green, and pink, along with bronze, copper, and polished brass. Each piece in this collection invites us to ponder how we safeguard our most treasured possessions.

To enhance Balzano’s artwork, the gallery has designed a setting reminiscent of the Gilded Age, covering the entire space in fabrics for a dramatic contrast with the sculptural and thought-provoking aspects of his creations. The exhibition will be open to visitors from September 4 to October 4, 2024.
