Stunning Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Replica Fetches $300,000 at Auction!

A highly accurate duplicate of the Ecto-1 vehicle from the Ghostbusters series was recently sold at an auction for approximately $300,000. This functional car, which is a customized 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance, was put up for sale at the yearly Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, where it garnered a substantial price.

This Ecto-1 replica is identical to the car featured in the initial movie, boasting the autographs of “Ghostbusters” actors Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and William Atherton (the character who portrayed EPA agent Walter Peck) on the driver’s side visor and dashboard. Filled with thoughtful customizations and fully operational features, this vehicle is a cherished dream for any dedicated “Ghostbusters” enthusiast.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve learned that the restoration journey for this amazing replica started back in 2012, under the watchful eye of Dr. Stewart A. Berkowitz, a renowned collector of TV and movie props, and an authority on pop culture. Unfortunately, he passed away in March 2024. After his departure, the project was carried forward by South End Kustom, a specialized body shop based in Hemet, California, and Ecto Tech located in New Jersey.

The company that successfully bid for the car is Gotham Cinema Rides, a New York-based business specializing in exotic and pop culture vehicle rental, which already possesses a well-known Ecto-1 replica used in numerous events and promotions like those for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The firm’s website confirms this information, but it is unclear if this latest acquisition will be rentable or kept on display solely as a showpiece.

The real car from “Ghostbusters” is kept at Sony Pictures Studios, and it’s included in their studio tour.

The ‘Ghostbusters’ Universe Is Still Expanding

In a different corner of the Ghostbusters universe, Sony has revealed plans for an animated movie on Netflix, distinct from the initially announced animated series slated for 2022. Seems like they’re aiming to give Ghostbusters a similar style seen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Regarding the upcoming live-action legacy sequels – Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its successor, Frozen Empire – series creator Aykroyd hinted that his time wearing the tan jumpsuit might be finished, and it seems unlikely that Bill Murray will reappear in any future films. There’s no news yet on whether Hudson, Atherton, or Annie Potts, who returned for one or both of the sequels, are open to making more appearances.

The tradition of the legacy films will persist, as the fresh set of characters take up the mantle for exciting new journeys. Director Gil Kenan, along with Jason Reitman – son of Ivan Reitman who directed both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II – announced their intention to continue the franchise indefinitely. With the positive reception of both Afterlife and Frozen Empire, this news undoubtedly brings joy to many fans.
