Ben Affleck boasts a collection of notable films in his repertoire, with his acting journey tracing back to the early 80s. However, it wasn’t until the 90s that he truly left an indelible mark as a movie star. In 1993, he was part of the cast for the now iconic cult favorite “Dazed and Confused.” He also featured in Kevin Smith’s films such as “Mallrats” (1995) and “Chasing Amy” (1997). Yet, it was the release of “Good Will Hunting” in 1997 that significantly propelled his career forward.
Despite some of Ben Affleck’s projects in the 2000s not being successful, including the controversial Daredevil (2003) adaptation, he experienced a resurgence in the 2010s beginning with The Town (2010). Following this crime thriller, Affleck took on both acting and directing roles in Argo (2012), which won Best Picture at the Oscars. Since then, he’s starred in films like Gone Girl (2014), several DCU movies, The Accountant (2016), and Air (2023), with a sequel to The Accountant upcoming. However, there’s one ’90s movie that continues to be a classic in Affleck’s filmography.
Ben Affleck’s Kids Weren’t Fans Of Armageddon
They Thought The Sci-Fi Disaster Flick Was “Stupid”
In a behind-the-scenes revelation, Ben Affleck admits that his kids criticized him for not making logical sense in the movie ‘Armageddon’ (1998). Directed by Michael Bay and featuring Affleck as an oil driller on a mission to prevent an asteroid from devastating Earth, the film also starred Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton. Despite its massive global box office success of $553 million, ‘Armageddon’ has faced criticism for its illogical storyline. Affleck humorously acknowledged during DVD commentary that it would have been more sensible to prepare astronauts as drillers instead of the other way around.
In a recent chat on Jimmy Kimmel Live, I (Affleck) shared an amusing tale about my kids and the movie Armageddon. You see, they are quite critical when it comes to Dad’s films, but in this case, their sharp eyes spotted the silliness of the movie rather quickly. Here’s a snippet of what I said: “My kids, they’re pretty tough critics when it comes to my work, but they didn’t take long to figure out that Armageddon was a bit silly.
While staying home due to COVID, all the kids were around and I suggested, ‘How about we watch a movie?’ I thought they might enjoy Armageddon, but almost instantly I heard, ‘What? This doesn’t make sense.’ My son said the same thing. I replied, ‘This movie isn’t meant to be logical; that wasn’t one of the factors considered during its production.’
What This Means For Armageddon
The Film’s Reception Explained
In Rotten Tomatoes, the film “Armageddon” received a 43% score from critics, who found it overly implausible and focused too much on visual effects rather than story depth. However, the audience-driven Popcornmeter score was higher at 73%, and the massive $553 million box office collection indicates that regular moviegoers were more open to this sci-fi blockbuster. From Ben Affleck’s comments, it seems his children lean more towards the side of criticizing the film rather than appreciating it.
Regardless of the questionable logic behind the Armageddon storyline and Ben Affleck’s comments about astronaut drillers, the film has made a significant impact as one of the most memorable disaster movies in history. Its popularity opened doors for more Michael Bay productions, such as the Transformers series, and boosted Affleck’s career as a leading actor. Although it may not receive critical acclaim in the near future, Armageddon remains a significant contribution to the genre.
