Subhash Ghai shares his thoughts over insider vs outsider in industry; 'Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan apni merit pe aaye'

As a dedicated follower of the Indian film industry, I have had the privilege of witnessing the meteoric rise of some truly exceptional talents, among whom Subhash Ghai stands out as a beacon of creativity and innovation. His work, spanning decades and genres, has not only enriched our cinematic landscape but also inspired countless aspiring filmmakers like myself.

Subhash Ghai, renowned for films such as Taal, Ram Lakhan, and Pardes, is a highly skilled director within the Hindi film industry. In recent years, Ghai directed the movie Kaanchi: The Unbreakable, starring Kartik Aaryan, which was released in 2014. Recently, the filmmaker has shared his views on nepotism in Bollywood, commenting on actors like Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan who achieved success due to their inherent talents rather than family connections.

In a recent conversation for The Invincibles Series featuring Arbaaz Khan, filmmaker Subhash Ghai shared his thoughts on the ongoing insider-outsider dispute, stating that ultimately, an actor’s success is determined by public approval rather than their familial connections.

As a die-hard fan, I’d put it this way: Ghai emphatically believes that success is earned through merit, and it’s ultimately up to the viewers to decide who’s worthy. He even gave an example of certain star kids who didn’t make it big, emphasizing that there’s a lengthy list of such cases, suggesting that talent and hard work are crucial factors in achieving success in this field.

The director of Ram Lakhan emphasized that there’s a portion of successful child stars who are often accused of fostering nepotism within the entertainment industry, but this allegation is unfair because every actor puts in hard work. He further stated that while star kids do have an advantage in terms of early exposure to film sets and their environment due to their upbringing, they still need to put in the effort to succeed.

“In every household, one can find either a lawyer’s family or a doctor’s family. When it comes to competition, the success of the individual will solely depend on their merits,” the 79-year-old filmmaker stated.

If Salman Khan achieved success, it’s because of his own merits. On the other hand, Shah Rukh Khan, who came from outside, also built his career on merit, as the senior filmmaker stated.

Previously, Raghav Juyal voiced his thoughts on this matter during an interview with India Today. Raghav described himself as the most prominent representative of someone starting from outside the industry, emphasizing that he put in tremendous effort to achieve success within it.

From Dehradun, Raghav shared that he operates independently without being represented by any talent agency. Regarding constant complaining, the actor from ‘The Killer’ added humorously that if he were to adopt that approach, he might find himself perpetually stuck in it.

Raghav mentioned his desire to persist in his career, regardless of whether he encounters success or setbacks in life. He analogized this perseverance to a sports player who bounces back after experiencing defeats.

Moving on to Subhash Ghai, this renowned director worked with Shah Rukh Khan in his 1997 film, Pardes. The cast also included Mahima Chaudhary, Amrish Puri, and Apoorva Agnihotri. In 2008, he teamed up with Salman Khan for the movie Yuvvraaj, which featured Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, and Zayed Khan as well.

Shah Rukh Khan is right now getting ready for his upcoming project titled “King.” This action movie is being helmed by director Sujoy Ghosh, and his daughter, actress Suhana Khan, will play a significant role in it. The film is slated to be released in the latter part of 2025.

In the meantime, Salman Khan is set to appear in AR Murgadoss’ film titled “Sikandar.” This film is being produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the production house of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. The movie will hit theaters on Eid 2025.

Subhash Ghai’s other famous movies include Karma, Saudagar, Meri Jung, and Khalnayak to name a few.
