As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of music and movies, this news about the upcoming Sublime biopic has me more excited than a kid at his first Coachella! KJ Apa stepping into the shoes of Bradley Nowell is a casting choice that makes perfect harmony. With Justin Chon at the helm as director, I’m confident we’re in for an unforgettable ride.
The forthcoming Sublime biopic feature from Sony‘s 3000 Pictures has found its Bradley Nowell.
KJ Apa is signed on to portray the late musician in a film that Justin Chon intends to direct. This as-yet-unnamed project is being developed, with Chon and Bobby Hundreds collaborating on the script based on an initial draft by Chris Mundy.
Chenin Entertainment’s projects are overseen by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready. As executive producers, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson from the surviving Sublime band join forces with Troy Nowell and Jakob Nowell who represent Bradley Nowell’s estate.
Originally slated to direct, but had to step down because of a scheduling issue, Francis Lawrence will additionally serve as an executive producer.
Marisa Paiva serves as the supervisor for the biographical film produced by 3000 Pictures, whereas Jamie Spetner, the director of development at Chernin Entertainment, takes charge in that role within their company.
Hey there! Coming from Long Beach, California, I was part of a rock band known as Sublime. Our big break arrived in 1996 when we released our self-titled, third studio album, “Sublime,” which surprisingly dropped just two months after the unfortunate demise of our lead vocalist Bradley Nowell due to a drug overdose at the tender age of 28. We’re famously known for hits like “What I Got” and “Santeria.” This year, we graced the stage at Coachella, with Bradley’s son, Jakob Nowell, stepping up as our frontman for the first time.
As a devoted fan, I recognize KJ Apa for his exceptional portrayal of Archie on the popular series “Riverdale,” which concluded after seven seasons last year. Beyond television, his film credits span across titles such as “Songbird,” “The Last Summer,” “The Hate U Give,” and the upcoming romantic comedy “Falling.” Interestingly, KJ Apa has also ventured into music, releasing original tracks as a singer. Notably, he previously played a musician in the 2020 film “I Still Believe.
In 2021, Justin Chon helmed the movie “Blue Bayou,” where he acted alongside Alicia Vikander. Furthermore, Chon was involved in the television series “Pachinko.
Hollywood continues to prioritize music biopics given the recent success of films like Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love”. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, a movie about the life of Queen Latifah is in development, with Will Smith producing it.
APA, UTA, Luber Roklin Entertainment, Mandy Jacobsen, Red 11 Management, and Jackoway Austen are the representatives for one party. WME, Theresa Kang of Blue Marble Management, and McKuin Frankel represent another party. Hundreds is also represented by UTA, Kang, and Jackoway Austen.
