Actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has disclosed a profoundly personal incident from her pregnancy period, describing it as her initial encounter with “patriarchal shock.” In a discussion with Filmymantra Media, she divulged that during her stay in London, upon learning she was carrying a baby girl, she encountered discouraging pressure from her late father-in-law.
“The first instance I experienced patriarchal shock was when I was pregnant. My then father-in-law would call me daily and say, ‘I’m waiting for my grandson, I am waiting for my grandson,'” she disclosed. At that time, gender testing during pregnancy was legal in London. The family was overjoyed to discover they were having a daughter. “We were all elated. My parents and family were joyful, everyone was celebrating, offering prayers, exchanging sweets,” she reminisced.
However, her joy was marred by her father-in-law’s persistent demand for a grandson. “My then father-in-law continued to call me and say, ‘It had better not be a girl, I want my grandson.’ I stopped communicating with him,” she explained, detailing the emotional impact this experience had on her.
Openly discussing her personal experiences, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has spoken about the emotional hardships she encountered during and following her marriage with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, and notably their divorce’s effect on their daughter, Kaveri Kapur. In a previous talk with News18, she shared thoughts on how their separation might have influenced Kaveri. She admitted that her own emotional upheavals possibly made the situation tougher for her child, expressing sorrow that Kaveri had to experience those testing times.
Apart from detailing the ordeal, she mentioned how the court proceedings’ strain was magnified by the media spotlight. The sudden flashes of cameras and persistent public interest only increased her emotional turmoil. Reflecting on those times, Suchitra openly acknowledged that her feelings were overwhelming during that phase, acknowledging it as a characteristic trait. In 1997, Suchitra tied the knot with Shekhar Kapur, and their daughter Kaveri was born in 2001. Their bond lasted for eight years before they parted ways.
Throughout her career, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has graced the big screen in numerous films, with notable performances in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994) alongside Shah Rukh Khan, as well as Jazbaat and Vaade Iraade (1994). She’s also known for her roles in My Wife’s Murder (2005), Aag (2007), and more recent films like Karma Aur Holi and Rann (2009), Mittal v/s Mittal (2010), Romeo Akbar Walter (2019), and Old Couple (2022). Her filmography boasts a diverse range of titles.
