Sucker Punch Studios, known for creating Ghost of Tsushima, is partnering with Aniplex, a renowned animation studio behind series like Demon Slayer and Rurouni Kenshin, to produce an anime adaptation centered around Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
On their official page, SuckerPunchProductions revealed that the upcoming anime will debut on Crunchyroll’s streaming service in the year 2027.
In Japanese folklore, the game Ghost of Tsushima: Legends presents four distinct characters who must confront the wicked Oni during the Mongol conquest of Tsushima. The upcoming anime is expected to draw inspiration from these legends and won’t be a continuation of Jin Sakai’s story from the initial game. Instead, it will offer a new narrative independent from his original journey.
Legends consists of nine narrative segments, potentially influencing the duration of any subsequent animated adaptation.
Enthusiasts can’t wait for the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima anime, but quite a few express their impatience as they find 2027 to be quite a distant release date.
Ghost of Tsushima, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, appears to be treading a path similar to numerous game titles that have recently seen TV or movie adaptations. Examples include Netflix’s Onimusha, HBO’s The Last of Us, and Amazon Prime’s Fallout, which have been increasingly popular in recent years.
In contrast to The Last of Us and Fallout, which are live adaptations, Netflix’s Onimusha was presented as an anime. Though it aimed to stay faithful to its source material, altering various elements from the game for the series left many Onimusha enthusiasts feeling let down. This is a lesson that Sucker Punch Productions should heed if they wish to cater to both new and long-time fans of the game.
Initially, Ghost of Tsushima garnered mostly favorable responses upon release, but encountered issues when transferred to PC gaming platforms. Unfortunately, gamers residing in regions without PSN support were unable to purchase the game until now. It’s hoped that the upcoming anime adaptation will provide a fresh experience for those who haven’t had the chance to play it before.
