Suits Creator Explains Why Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Appears In Suits: LA

As a devoted fan of Suits, I’m thrilled to share that despite wrapping up its nine-season run on USA Network back in 2019, this beloved show continues to captivate audiences on Netflix in 2023. This renewed popularity has paved the way for an expansion of the Suits universe in the 2025 TV lineup.

The spinoff, Suits: L.A., is just a month away from its premiere on NBC, with episodes later available to stream on Peacock. Even more excitingly, it was announced last November that the original star of Suits, Gabriel Macht, will reprise his iconic role as Harvey Specter in a three-episode arc.

Creator of both Suits and the spinoff, Aaron Korsh, has recently revealed why we’ll be seeing Harvey in Suits: L.A., and it all makes perfect sense!

This originated from a fan who inquired whether Gina Torres would reprise her role as Jessica Pearson on Suits: L.A., to which the creative mind replied that they’re “open to all possibilities but we aim to introduce these characters on this new show.” When another fan questioned why Harvey was chosen to return from the original Suits and if this reflects Korsh’s view of the previous series, he responded on X.

The network was keen on having one of the original characters back. From a narrative perspective, Harvey seemed to fit best in this context. Initially, I wrote this as an independent piece, not as a spin-off from Suits, so it’s unclear what that implies about my perspective on either one.

Essentially, Aaron Korsh and the team behind Suits: L.A. had to find a way to incorporate one former Suits cast member into the storyline as per NBC’s request. Harvey seemed like the ideal pick to them. Initially, Korsh conceived Suits: L.A. as a standalone TV series rather than a spinoff from a popular basic cable show. However, as it developed into what we’ll see in a few weeks, he recognized that Harvey was the perfect fit to seamlessly blend into the narrative. Luckily, we have a clue about how this is being done thanks to the trailer for Suits: L.A., which was released last week.

Towards the close of the trailer, the main character, Ted Black (portrayed by Stephen Amell), engages in conversation with Kevin, played by Troy Winbrush. In this interaction, Kevin raises a photograph displaying Ted along with Harvey and two other individuals, apparently pausing their baseball game. Kevin expresses his dislike for Harvey, stating that he perceived him as the one who was more arrogant than Ted, which is what attracted Ted to him. This suggests a long-standing relationship between Ted and Harvey, although it seems unlikely they attended law school together given Gabriel Macht’s age difference from Amell.

It’s not yet clear when Gabriel Macht will make his debut on “Suits: L.A.”, but I’m eager to discover more about the unique bond between Harvey Specter and Ted Black. Alongside Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg, the main cast of this spinoff also includes Victoria Justice, Alice Lee, Rachelle Goulding, Anita Ghanizada, Maggie Grace, Matt Letscher, Sofia Pernas, Carson A. Egan, and the late John Amos in his final screen performance. The pilot was penned by Aaron Korsh, with Victoria Mahoney at the helm for direction.

Exciting news for Suits fans like myself! The spin-off series, Suits: L.A., is set to debut on NBC this Sunday, February 23rd. Whether you’ve been a long-time fan of Suits and have binged it on Netflix or Peacock, or if you’re new to the world of Pearson Specter Litt, don’t worry! You won’t need prior knowledge of the original series to keep up with the thrilling storyline unfolding in Suits: L.A. Let’s tune in and see what this new chapter has in store for us!
