Suits’ Patrick J. Adams Opens Up About Why He Left The Legal Drama After Season 7: ‘That For Me Was A Breaking Point’

As a fan who has followed Patrick J. Adams‘ career since his days on “Old School,” it’s been truly enlightening to witness his personal growth and transformation over the years. His portrayal of Mike Ross on “Suits” was iconic, but it seems that behind the scenes, he was struggling with mental health issues and alcohol addiction.

Season 7 of the legal drama “Suits,” which originally aired on USA Network but gained massive popularity on Netflix last year, marked a significant shift. Gina Torres’ character, Jessica Pearson, made less frequent appearances after moving to Chicago during Season 6 for her spinoff. By the end of the season, both Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle, who played series regulars, bid farewell. Adams’ departure, in particular, was noteworthy as his character, Mike Ross, shared co-lead status with Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter. Adams has since disclosed the personal reasons that prompted his decision to leave the show.

During an interview on “Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson,” Adams admitted that Meghan Markle leaving “Suits” to become part of the Royal Family opened up the opportunity for him to do the same. This move, he expressed, was something he didn’t regret because it allowed him to be closer to his girlfriend and future wife, Troian Bellisario, rather than continuing their long-distance relationship. However, Adams also mentioned that he was grappling with personal issues that contributed to his decision.

During the seventh season, I neglected my mental well-being significantly, turning to excessive alcohol consumption. I was living a life without much self-reflection or introspection, which left me feeling quite unhappy and, in all honesty, quite depressed. Unfortunately, I didn’t possess the skills to manage that depression effectively other than by spending money recklessly and drinking heavily. Furthermore, I struggled to discuss my feelings with others.

Before Suits graced my screen, I was no stranger to the world of acting. I shared scenes with the likes of Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson, and Vince Vaughn in Old School (2003), and made guest appearances on Friday Night Lights, Lost, and NCIS. But it was Suits that catapulted me into a whole new stratosphere of professional success. The show revolves around Mike Ross, a college dropout with an extraordinary memory, who is taken under the wing of Harvey Specter to become an associate at his law firm, all while keeping the secret that he never graduated from Harvard.

However, when Season 7 came along, Adams found himself struggling with personal issues such as mental health troubles and alcohol problems. These struggles persisted even after he left the show, impacting how he brought up his daughter Aurora, born in 2018. He went on to say…

… Instead of numbing myself and focusing on my own issues, I realized I needed to address my insecurities and fears to be a better parent and partner. However, my attempts were unsuccessful and were negatively affecting both my relationship and my role as a father. The tipping point for me was recognizing that my drinking was impacting my parenting in a negative way. I missed being the kind of dad I wanted to be, so I decided to stop drinking. I believe this decision was the best thing I ever did for myself, as it paved the way for other positive changes in my life.

It’s evident that Adams has significantly improved his mental state compared to before, and parting ways with Suits seems to have played a role in this improvement. However, it’s worth noting that he didn’t stay away from the series for long as he returned during Season 9. With Gabriel Macht set to reprise Harvey Specter in the upcoming Suits spinoff, Suits L.A., there might be a chance that Adams could resurrect Mike Ross on that show as well, which is slated to premiere on February 25 in the 2025 TV schedule.

Besides being streamable with a Netflix subscription, it’s also available for those who have Peacock in their streaming library. Additionally, episodes of Suits L.A. will be posted there following their airings on NBC. As for Patrick J. Adams, he’s currently involved in the filming of his next series titled Lockerbie, a drama production.
