As a movie reviewer with a keen eye for behind-the-scenes drama and a heart for personal struggles, I must say that Patrick J. Adams‘ story is both heartbreaking and inspiring. The actor’s decision to quit ‘Suits’ was not just about chasing greener pastures or following his co-star Meghan Markle; it was a battle against personal demons that he had been hiding for too long.
As a dedicated Suits fan, I was taken aback when Patrick J. Adams, along with his on-screen partner Meghan Markle, decided to part ways with the beloved series following season 7. However, it was a deeply personal and heartbreaking decision that drove Adams to leave.
In an episode of the “Dinner’s on Me” podcast featuring Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Adams shared his battles with excessive drinking during the later seasons of Suits. He confessed, “Towards the end of Season 7, I wasn’t taking care of my mental health and I was drinking too much.” Admitting to living a life that lacked introspection, he described himself as being in a state of misery and depression. He added, “I didn’t have the skills to cope with that depression apart from overspending and drinking excessively, without truly understanding how to discuss it.” Adams admitted that his dependence on alcohol originated from his anxieties on set, which significantly impacted his personal life. He further explained:
I used to try to suppress my insecurities and fears, but it didn’t help. In fact, it had a negative impact on my relationship, and moreover, it made me an absent-minded parent.
At that particular instance, Adams decided to stop drinking, expressing it as, “That moment felt like a turning point where I realized, ‘Perhaps I should stop drinking, as I don’t want to be the kind of dad I don’t want to be.'” He further stated, “Quitting drinking is possibly the best decision I’ve ever made for myself.
Patrick J. Adams Would Have Only Stayed on ‘Suits’ For the “Money”
The TV show “Suits” is among the most popular ever streamed, with a significant portion of that success coming from its availability on Netflix last year. With seven seasons completed, Patrick J. Adams had originally intended to come back for Season 8; however, he confessed that his genuine feelings weren’t in it, and staying would have felt insincere. Essentially, he said, “The only reason I was considering staying was… money. I wasn’t sure what else I could contribute.
After Adams departed, Gabriel Macht carried on portraying Harvey Specter for an additional two seasons. To fill Mike Ross’s role in the buddy-lawyer dynamic of ‘Suits’, they introduced Katherine Heigl as seasoned attorney Samantha Wheeler. Over the past few years, there have been instances where Adams felt remorseful about leaving the show prematurely, but his regrets were misplaced. He clarified:
As a cinephile, there are moments when, in the stillness of the night, my mind wanders to the financial success Gabriel Macht enjoyed over the past two years. Yet, not once have I harbored a single moment of regret for the decision I made. It was an unquestionably right choice for my marriage’s sake… It was long overdue.
As a dedicated Suits fan, I didn’t fully say goodbye to the show after Season 7. Though I was noticeably absent for the entirety of Season 8, I made a comeback for several episodes in Season 9, even gracing the screen during the series finale. The main storyline wrapped up in 2019, but the Suits universe lives on with Suits L.A., a spin-off that features Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, Bryan Greenberg, and Troy Winbush. And here’s some exciting news for Harvey Specter fans like me – Gabriel Macht is returning to reprise his role in the new series!
