Sundance Festival in Turmoil as Two Films Yanked Over Shocking Piracy Scandal!

Sundance suddenly has a piracy problem.

The movie “Twinless” by James Sweeney, which won two awards at the Sundance Film Festival and was available on their online screening portal, has been removed following the appearance of clips on social media. This action was taken shortly after a similar situation occurred with Isabel Castro’s documentary about the late Selena Quintanilla, “Selena y Los Dinos.” This film also garnered favor at the festival, winning an award for exceptional archival storytelling in U.S. documentaries.

As a passionate fan, I’ve never encountered anything quite like this before: it’s my first time witnessing pirated copies and clips pop up online during the Sundance Film Festival’s online screening. However, given the unexpected twist that COVID-19 has brought to our lives, Sundance swiftly adapted by providing an online platform. This move has been nothing short of a game-changer, making the festival more accessible for both filmmakers and audiences alike.

While it’s premature to predict the long-term effects of piracy on the fest, a representative from Sundance assured us in an interview with IndieWire that they plan to keep the online platform operational for all remaining films.

As a gamer speaking about my experience, I’d say:

“Hey there fellow film enthusiasts! Sadly, I have some disappointing news to share regarding the movie ‘Selena y Los Dinos’. Due to copyright issues, it has been removed from the Sundance Film Festival online platform. I know this might be upsetting for everyone who was looking forward to watching it, but protecting the rights of independent creators is a crucial part of what Sundance stands for. They aim to ensure these artists can guard their work and earn a living, not just now, but in the future too.

I want to emphasize that Sundance takes copyright infringement very seriously and will be working closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement to address this matter. I hope you understand the importance of upholding these principles.

In the movie “Twinless,” Dylan O’Brien won both an audience award and a special jury prize for acting. Clips from this film appeared on platforms like X (previously Twitter) and TikTok. Unfortunately, one of the popular clips showed a sensitive scene involving his co-star Sweeney that is actually a spoiler in the movie. The plot revolves around O’Brien and Sweeney as grieving siblings who meet in a twin loss support group and develop a friendship, with this specific scene disclosing crucial events better left unspoiled.

On Saturday, the individual behind the pirated video clips wasn’t well-known in the online community. Freelance writer Nadira Begum expressed her disapproval by stating, “The person who leaked that Sundance film is really just a nobody.” She questioned the actions of this individual, saying, “Is it really worth jeopardizing future access to online film festivals (especially when they were becoming more accessible!) for a brief moment of footage?

The online portion of the film festival is open through Feb. 2.
