Super Bowl Box Office Battle: ‘Heart Eyes’ vs. ‘Love Hurts’ as ‘Dog Man’ Dominates

In its second weekend, the family film “Dog Man,” produced by DreamWorks Animation and Universal, continues to reign at the box office with a projected earnings of $13.7 million from 3,886 theaters. Meanwhile, new releases “Heart Eyes” and “Love Hurts” are fiercely competing for any remaining revenue opportunities in the Super Bowl lineup.

The earnings for “Dog Man” now stand at an appealing $54.1 million by Sunday, considering it was made at around $40 million in production costs.

The weekend of the Super Bowl has traditionally been tough for Hollywood studios because movie attendance drops significantly during the big game. This year’s championship features a rematch between last season’s winner, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Philadelphia Eagles. In terms of films released during the Super Bowl, those aimed at younger female audiences or genre titles popular with younger viewers have often been the choice, and this trend continues this year, although there seems to be a greater emphasis on genre films this time around.

In a different wording:
Heart Eyes, Sony’s Screen Gems and Spyglass’ Valentine’s Day romantic comedy, is projected to earn between $8.5 million and $10 million in its opening weekend, placing it as the second highest-grossing film behind Dog Man. On its first day, it just barely took the lead on the box office chart with a take of $3.6 million from 3,102 theaters.

The movie centers around a murderer wearing a heart-shaped mask, who journeys between cities to commit murders on Valentine’s Day. This slasher film is directed by Josh Ruben and features Mason Gooding, Jordana Brewster, and Olivia Holt as the main actors.

Despite receiving positive feedback, the movie titled “Heart Eyes” wasn’t quite as popular among viewers, resulting in a B- grade from CinemaScore.

Universal’s movie “Love Hurts” is set to debut in third position, anticipating a box office take of approximately $6 million from 3,200 cinemas. This action-packed film revolves around an unassuming real estate agent grappling with his turbulent past, with Ke Huy Quan, winner of the Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” in the lead role alongside Daniel Wu, Ariana DeBose, and Marshawn Lynch. The multi-ethnic cast also features Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch, a former NFL running back and Super Bowl champion.

David Leitch of the John Wick franchise is among the film’s producers.

Critics have bashed the film, while audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore.

As a gamer, I’ve just finished playing through an engaging game called “Love Hurts,” developed by the talented team at 87North under Kelly McCormick and Leitch. The script for this emotional rollercoaster was penned by the gifted Matthew Murray, while directorial duties were handled by JoJo Eusebio in his impressive first attempt behind the camera.

Disney’s eighth-weekend showing of “Mufasa: The Lion King” during Thanksgiving is still holding strong at the No. 8 spot, and it’s anticipated to earn approximately $4.2 million from 2,945 cinemas, taking its domestic total to over $235 million.

It’s not just that there’s a lot of genre content out there, it’s more like an overflow. The sci-fi movie “Companion” from New Line and Warner Bros., in its second weekend, has managed to earn an estimated $3.4 million, bringing its total domestic earnings to $16.2 million over a 10-day period.

Numbers will be updated Sunday morning.
