Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

James Gunn, a joint leader at DC Studios, recently posted a behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram of Milly Alcock, as she prepares for her role as Kara Zor-El (popularly recognized as Supergirl) in the upcoming film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In his post, Gunn honors the iconic comic book character, who first appeared 66 years ago in Action Comics #252, and all her different adaptations. He specifically highlights Alcock’s portrayal, mentioning that she embodies an “unyielding” spirit.

Today, we’re honoring Supergirl in all her forms! I’m really looking forward to you checking out the upcoming interpretation, skillfully played by Milly Alcock, coming in June 2026, as expressed in his Instagram post caption. But for those eager to catch a glimpse of Supergirl in her superhero attire, patience is key, since the image captured by Parisa Taghizadeh primarily focuses on the actress herself, posing with a copy of the “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book, written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira has adapted this comic for the upcoming cosmic DCU film.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently in production, with Alcock bringing the Kryptonian heroine to the big screen as part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The movie, directed by Craig Gillespie, is set to follow Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, on an intergalactic adventure that will see her visiting various space-bound locations (per recent set photos) with Krypto the Superdog. At some point along the way, she will meet a character named Ruthye and wind up on a murderous quest for revenge. The plot synopsis for the comic reads:

As Supergirl contemplates calling it a day, an unexpected turn of events unfolds. A young extraterrestrial girl tracks her down for a mission that could be lethal. The girl’s home planet has been annihilated, and those responsible are still at large. Seeking vengeance with unwavering determination, she threatens to carry out the mission herself, regardless of the consequences, unless Supergirl lends a hand.

Milly Alcock Will Make Her DCU Debut in ‘Superman’

Gunn and his DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran are leading the way into an exhilarating new phase for DC films, TV shows, and animation, with a robust lineup that kicks off with “Creature Commandos,” which debuted on Max in December. Following this, the second installment (and the first film), titled “Superman,” is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, featuring David Corenswet as the main character. It’s anticipated that Alcock will make her DC Universe debut in “Superman” before headlining her own superhero movie, which is planned for release approximately a year later on June 26, 2026.

Next year, Alcock will lead her standalone movie, but she won’t be acting alone within the cast. Eve Ridley portrays Ruthye Mary Knolle, Matthias Schoenaerts takes on the role of the villainous Krem from the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz steps into Supergirl’s father Zor-El, and Emily Beecham is cast as Alura In-Ze. Furthermore, Jason Momoa, previously seen in Aquaman, will embody the cosmic bounty hunter Lobo. Interestingly, Momoa claims that his costume closely resembles the iconic outfit worn by this character in various DC Comics.

In the summer of 2026, the movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is set to hit theaters on June 26. A year earlier, on July 11, 2025, you’ll be able to catch the premiere of another iconic hero, Superman.
