Filming for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is currently in progress, and the characters of Supergirl’s parents have recently been selected for this much-anticipated movie adaptation of the DC Comic with the same title. In the upcoming film, Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon” will portray Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl in the DC Universe. Excitingly, well-loved actors have been chosen to play Supergirl’s mom and dad.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham will portray Supergirl’s parents in the upcoming project. Among the other cast members, Eve Ridley takes on the role of Ruthie Marye Knoll, a young woman who enlists Supergirl’s help to track down her father’s killer. Matthias Schoenaerts from “Rust and Bone” will play Krem from the Yellows Hills. Previously known for his role as Aquaman, Jason Momoa is set to embody the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in this film.
Although the press release doesn’t mention it, Supergirl’s parents in the comics are called Zor-El and Alura. Krumholtz became famous as Bernard in “The Santa Clause” from 1994 and is also recognized for his roles in movies like “10 Things I Hate About You,” “Addams Family Values,” and the recent Best Picture winner, “Oppenheimer.” Beecham is most known for her appearances on popular TV shows such as “Into the Badlands,” “The Pursuit of Love,” and “1899.” Krumholtz and Beecham have both acted in “Hail, Caesar!”, but they didn’t appear together in any scenes.
Previously, Simon Ward and Mia Farrow portrayed Zor-El and Alura in the 1984 film “Supergirl”. Christopher Heyerdahl played Zor-El on “Smallville”, while Laura Benanti initially played Alura on the CW’s “Supergirl” for Season 1. However, starting from Season 2, Erica Durance took over as Alura, having previously acted as Lois Lane on “Smallville”. Krumholtz and Beecham are assuming significant roles in carrying forward the legacy of portraying Supergirl’s parents, whose importance to the hero’s origins is comparable to that of Superman’s parents.
Supergirl’s Parents Might Have Big Roles in the DCU
Previously, Krumholtz shared that he auditioned for the role of Ben Grimm / The Thing in the upcoming MCU film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” but the studio opted to cast Ebon Moss-Bachrach instead, preventing him from joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Krumholtz now finds himself in the DCU, with potential significant roles in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and future films within the franchise. It’s intriguing to note that the DCU has chosen actors for Supergirl’s Kryptonian parents, but as of yet, no one has been announced to portray Superman’s Kryptonian father Jor-El and mother Lara in “Superman” or any future DCU projects.
In the comic books, Zor-El is Jor-El’s brother and Superman’s father figure. Originally, Zor-El and his wife Alura sent their daughter away from Krypton’s destruction in a rocket, similar to how Superman was sent to Earth. However, in the original comics, Supergirl’s parents, Alura and Zor-El, survived Krypton’s demise and lived on New Krypton. In the 2011 New 52 reboot, Zor-El turned into a villain known as the Cyborg Superman after Brainiac altered him. It remains uncertain whether this aspect will appear in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ or the DCU, but it opens up an intriguing plotline for future narratives. Actors Krumholtz and Beecham may not be widely recognized, but they bring talent to the impressive cast that director Craig Gillespie is assembling for the second DCU feature film.
