Wherever director James Gunn goes, little brother Sean Gunn isn’t far behind.
The pair from Hollywood often collaborate on movie ventures, with their latest effort being James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3.” In this series, Sean Gunn portrays the character Kraglin Obfonteri.
Currently, Pedro Pascal is breathing life into the character of Maxwell Lord from DC Comics, as part of the highly-anticipated reboot of the DC Comics’ Man of Steel series, “Superman.” Previously, he portrayed this villainous figure in the film “Wonder Woman 1984.
It’s not unexpected that Sean Gunn was spotted on the red carpet for the movie on Monday evening. This is when a Variety journalist questioned him about his brother’s unexpected political maneuver related to the film at the last minute.
Beginning July 11, “Superman” will be showing nationwide. For over a year, the promotional efforts have been neutral and optimistic, but James Gunn broke this trend during an interview with The Times of London. He labeled the title character as an immigrant and described the film as a political statement advocating for open borders.
Disagree? Screw you, the director said. So did brother Sean Gunn, in so many words.
A chuckling reporter from Variety questioned Sean Gunn regarding the response of MAGA followers towards the unexpectedly political “Superman” remake. Gunn replied with a grin on his face.

Sean Gunn stated that the movie’s theme mirrors our message of backing and valuing our fellow citizens, including immigrants. Indeed, Superman is an immigrant, reflecting the very people we champion in this nation, who are also immigrants. If you disagree with this, it seems you may not embody true American values. Those against immigrants go against the essence of what America stands for, and more importantly, the core principles of the American dream.
The unnamed journalist sarcastically remarked, using the phrase ‘Truth, justice, and the American way,’ a quote often used in movies that tends to be overlooked or forgotten.
As a follower, I find it concerning when Gunn and the reporter seem to blur the lines between legal and illegal immigration. It’s essential to recognize that not every country offers immediate citizenship rights to visitors, just as it isn’t possible for an American to easily step into another country and enjoy the same privileges as a native citizen.
Regardless of the approach taken, Sean Gunn could have calmed the situation down. He could have clarified his brother’s remarks or rephrased the message to make it more inviting.
Instead, he doubled down. We’ll see how well that plays out starting July 11.
