As a long-time fan of Superman and the DC universe, I must say that this week’s episode of “Superman & Lois” was nothing short of exhilarating! The introduction of Jimmy Olsen and the revelation of Clark Kent’s past with him was a delightful surprise. It was fascinating to see how Clark had to maintain his secret identity even in his friendships, which added an interesting layer to their relationship.

In the TV series Superman & Lois, when Doomsday killed Superman and left his body in downtown Smallville, it wasn’t just the world’s finest superhero that was lost. The tragic event sparked suspicion among the people of Smallville that Clark Kent might be Superman, due to Lois, Jonathan, and Jordan’s reactions to the terrible scene. Now that Clark is alive again, he and his entire family must cope with neighbors and townsfolk hinting, or even openly suggesting, that they know his secret.
Discussing now the happenings in “A Regular Guy,” a series that concluded on the 2024 television lineup and saw Clark taking an action that was groundbreaking and will significantly impact the upcoming episodes of Superman & Lois. However, prior to diving into that, let’s first focus on how the DC show unveiled its portrayal of Jimmy Olsen, skillfully played by Douglas Smith.
Clark Kent’s Past With Jimmy Olsen Was Revealed
In ‘A Regular Day,’ there were frequent reminiscences about Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s days at The Daily Planet, where they teamed up with Jimmy and his sister Janet. At that point in his life, Clark had confided in Lois that he was Superman, but was careful to keep it a secret from others. This was the reason behind his initial refusal when Jimmy invited him to join The Daily Planet’s softball team. However, after some persuasion by Lois and seeing an opportunity to play the ‘bunt guy,’ Clark reconsidered and it seemed like this could mark the start of a friendship between them beyond work.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself in a peculiar situation lately. With global crises demanding Superman’s presence, my regular appearances at the softball games became inconsistent. Jimmy, a close friend of mine, started questioning my reasons for missing out. At first, he suspected I was avoiding him socially. But Jimmy Olsen, the sharp-witted ally he is, soon figured it out – every time I missed a game, Superman was off saving lives somewhere else in the world.
In other words, we’ve learned why Jimmy Olsen hasn’t appeared in Superman & Lois until now – it’s because Clark deliberately distanced himself from Jimmy to conceal his secret identity. This is quite different from the usual friendly dynamic between them, but it was clear that Clark felt regret having to take this action. Thankfully, they reconciled at the end of “A Regular Guy” on amicable terms, a topic I’ll delve into further later on.
The World Knows Clark Kent Is Superman
Shift focus to the current tale of Superman and Lois. Clark Kent roamed the town, trying to persuade those who claimed to recognize him as Superman that their assumptions were incorrect. However, it wasn’t as straightforward as it seemed. Clark encountered varying levels of success in his mission, and an awkward scene unfolded where he, along with Jonathan and Jordan, were essentially making Timmy Ryan, one of their classmates, doubt his own perception, all witnessed by his mother. Even Jonathan and Jordan grew exasperated, having to constantly lie to shield a secret that was becoming increasingly public knowledge.
In the latest episode of Superman and Lois, they delved into Lex Luthor’s bond with his daughter. However, what truly sets things in motion is the surprising twist involving Doomsday.
The actor from Superman and Lois speaks candidly about stepping into the shoes previously filled by Michael Rosenbaum and Jon Cryer, without any team members being let go for the role.
Subsequently, it was Emmitt Pergande, Candice’s abusive father who Clark had forced to leave town last season due to his violent behavior and criminal actions, who arrived at Victoria May’s with a gun. This was after word got out that Clark is Superman. As Clark and Lois were dining with Kyle Cushing and Chrissy Beppo, Pergande aimed at revealing the truth. He fired a shot, but Clark, as Superman, deflected it off his chest, thus revealing his Superman outfit to everyone in the diner. Essentially, there was no going back for the people of Smallville after this revelation, and Clark decided to make a major leap forward with this incident.
Following the approval of his family, Clark sat down for a TV interview with Janet Olsen, choosing to unveil his secret to everyone globally. Once this cat was out of the bag, there was no turning back, implying that Jonathan and Jordan’s abilities were now public knowledge as well. The series finale “A Regular Guy” concluded on an optimistic note, with Clark reconnecting with Jimmy Olsen after many years apart, and it appeared they were finally going to build a friendship.
I must admit, I was taken aback when such a significant event occurred before the series finale of Superman & Lois, given how Supergirl chose to reveal Kara Zor-El’s secret identity to all. It will certainly be intriguing to see how this plays out in the remaining three episodes, whether it turns out to be beneficial or detrimental. On a less favorable note, we discovered that Emmitt Pergande didn’t learn Clark Kent was Superman from Candice, but rather from Lex Luthor, as they crossed paths while imprisoned. Although Luthor took a beating from Clark last week and returned to Metropolis, he’s devising new ways to torment his arch-enemy while waiting for his “killer suit” to be completed.
