As a long-time fan of Superman and his exploits, I must say that the series finale of Superman & Lois left me with a mix of emotions that ranged from heartache to profound satisfaction. Having grown up on the Man of Steel’s adventures, it was a bittersweet moment to witness the end of this extraordinary show.

After four thrilling seasons and 53 action-packed episodes, it’s a wrap for Superman & Lois in this week’s TV lineup of 2024. As a dedicated fan, I must admit I was apprehensive about the finale, but my curiosity got the better of me. Now that I’ve seen it, I can honestly say that the series’ conclusion was nothing short of stellar, giving each character a fitting end. However, there’s one scene in particular that left an indelible mark – the heart-wrenching final scene.
What Happened To Supeman & Lois’ Main Characters In The Series Finale?
The last episode resumed immediately following the previous one, where Clark, Lois, and their sons worked tirelessly to safeguard Smallville from Doomsday, who was released by a vindictive Lex Luthor. With assistance from John Henry Irons (Steel) and town mayor Lana Lang, the Kents were able to subdue the monster using Irons’ hammer. Superman then transported the creature – previously Bizzaro Clark – to the sun in an attempt to weaken it. In the sun, the creature regained its senses and made a selfless sacrifice.
After eliminating the Doomsday threat, the show’s main characters and their allies continued to face the menace of Lex Luthor, who was wearing John Henry’s armor. Following a fresh weapon created by Iron, Lex and Clark engaged in a fierce battle far above the clouds. Luther hurled kryptonite-infused weapons at Superman, but he overcame them and with great force, destroyed the suit and ended Luthor’s rule.
One year advance finds John Henry Irons and Lana Lang tying the knot, having had an on-and-off relationship before. Ex-spouse Kyle Cushing and Chrissy Beppo welcomed a son and are anticipating another. Meanwhile, Sarah, daughter of Lana and Kyle, returned from her Greek studies with plans to travel abroad again. As for Lex Luthor, his final appeal was rejected, meaning he’ll stay at Stryker’s Prison forever and deal with the anger of fellow inmate Bruno Manheim.
It’s safe to say these advancements were quite impactful and would undoubtedly stir emotions within someone. Yet, it’s hard to imagine any amount of preparation could have fully prepared viewers for the final ten minutes of this series conclusion.

As a passionate gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “Man, it felt like a three-fold punch to the gut! Elizabeth Tulloch from Superman and Lois spoke out about the show’s termination. She doesn’t want fans to take their frustration out on James Gunn over it.
A significant storyline in the final season revolved around Clark’s mortality after his resurrection. In a poignant twist, it was disclosed that due to his new heart, provided by his father-in-law Sam Lane, he would eventually perish. The producers emphasized this through the closing scenes of the series. Narrated by Tyler Hoechlin as Clark, the tale unfolded the next 32 years of his life. During this period, Clark and Lois undertook charitable endeavors, aged gracefully together, and witnessed their sons Jordan and Jonathan get married and expand their family with numerous children. On the superhero front, the boys transitioned into being do-gooders themselves, teaming up with Steel and Starlight (played by Natalie Irons) as their associates.
Tragically, Lois’ cancer came back and ultimately took her life, with her husband and sons by her side in those final moments. However, it was equally heart-wrenching to learn that several years later, Clark passed away surrounded by his sons, after living a fuller life with his new dog, Krypto. Yet, unlike the way he died at Doomsday’s hands, Clark experienced a very different end this time – instead of darkness, he was greeted by images of his loved ones and friends as he entered the afterlife, including visions of his wife.
That afterlife sequence may be one of the most cathartic moments I’ve ever witnessed on a TV show – series finale or not. For starters, to see Superman pass on to the next life was just bittersweet and beautiful. But what truly caused me to nearly shed tears over this sequence is that Clark outlines what’s important in life and uses those in his orbit to illustrate that – Jonathan and Jordan (joy), the Kent’s grandchildren (hope), Lex Luthor (forgiveness Krypto (wonder) Kyle and Chrissy (friendship), John Henry and Lana (family) and Lois (love).
Each of those points not only serve as admirable aspirations in life but also encapsulate the ideals that have forever been associated with Superman, aka the Man of Steel. The ability of the creators, scriptwriters, and cast to subtly guide us towards such a profound conclusion is nothing short of remarkable, and I must admit, it stirs up quite a bit of emotion within me upon reflection. I strongly believe that discussions about Superman & Lois will continue for years to come, and when debating the finest episodes, this finale (particularly its closing scene) will undoubtedly be in the running.
