‘Superman’ First Reactions: “A Terrific Start for the New DC Studios”

This weekend, it’s confirmed that Superman will take flight in cinemas, with the initial responses from audiences being shared post-Los Angeles premiere on Monday evening now public due to the lifting of the film’s social media restrictions.

Although formal reviews won’t be out until tomorrow, the initial online responses from press, influencers, and media who have already watched the film seem to be generally positive. Erik Davis from Fandango commented, “A terrific start for the new DC Studios.” Perri Nemiroff of Collider stated, “The movie is packed with exciting action sequences and strategically placed humor and lightness.

The upcoming movie titled Superman, set to release on July 11, is the creation of Director James Gunn. In this movie, David Correnswet takes on the role of Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Holt portrays Lex Luthor. The rest of the cast includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Mercad as Hawkgirl, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Nathan Fillon as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

In February of this year, Gunn expressed to The Hollywood Reporter, “Currently, there’s a strong desire for role models. People seek virtues such as kindness and decency. And Superman embodies these qualities.

The film represents the initial DC production for Gunn since he assumed control of Warner Bros’ superhero division alongside producer Peter Safran, starting from October 2022. In addition, other forthcoming projects under the DC Studios banner include the HBO series titled “Lanterns,” set to debut in 2026, and a Supergirl movie.

In February, Safran stated that various creative teams within the company were each developing their unique interpretations of the DC characters and narratives, leading to multiple versions of the DC Universe instead of one. He explained that this fragmentation posed significant difficulties for consumers and eroded the distinct identity of the brand.
