As a die-hard fan of Superman since I was a young lad, tearing through the pages of Action Comics and gazing at the Man of Steel soaring across the skies of Metropolis, I must say that the latest developments in Superman & Lois have left me utterly gobsmacked! The revelation of Brainiac’s return and the tragic demise of our beloved Kal-El have sent shockwaves through the DC Universe, much like when Doomsday first punched his way onto the scene.
Caution! The upcoming Season 4 of Superman & Lois holds significant SPOILERS. In the opening episode titled “The End & the Beginning,” after Doomsday drags Superman’s (Tyler Hoechlin) lifeless body through the city, Amanda McCoy hands Lex Luthor a glowing box. She remarks, “It’s not much to look at, but Milton assured me it would work.” It is then revealed that Milton, also known as Milton Fine, is another alias for Superman’s arch-nemesis, Brainiac. Co-showrunner Brent Fletcher spoke about this intriguing development in an interview with ComicBook.com.
Given the narrative requirements, incorporating Milton into our tale turned out splendidly. Discovering a fresh perspective on such a familiar character added an element of thrill. As always, we enjoy crafting unique narratives, and this one proved to be quite engaging.
Originally, the antagonist known as Brainiac made his debut in the comic book series “Action Comics” issue 242 (1958), during the Silver Age of comics. On that cover, you’d find him in his initial, green-skinned form. Over time, Brainiac has undergone substantial changes, particularly in terms of his visual portrayal.
For instance, Brainiac, as portrayed by Milton Fine, didn’t debut until 30 years later in Superman’s Adventures comic (Issue 438). This was after DC Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline had concluded. Although the upcoming appearance of this villain is certainly intriguing, it’s tragic that a cherished character met a violent end in “The End & the Beginning.
The Death of Superman
In the climactic showdown against Doomsday, Superman/Clark Kent (Hoechlin) meets his gruesome end, left badly wounded and disheveled. However, unlike the comics where this event transpired in issues of DC’s Superman: Man of Steel, Superman, Adventures of Superman, and Action Comics from late 1992 to January ’93, the demise of the Last Son of Krypton is depicted differently in Superman & Lois. One notable difference in this adaptation is that Doomsday tears Superman’s heart from his chest and hands it over to Lex Luthor (Cudlitz). In a recent interview with TV Insider, Todd Helbing explains the decision to kill Superman during the premiere episode of Superman & Lois Season 4.
It seemed fitting to share this particular tale. As usual, we draw inspiration from the comics and renowned arcs, aiming to add our unique take on Superman & Lois. With 43 hours of viewer engagement behind us, we felt confident in delivering the storyline authentically while presenting it in a novel manner and maximizing its emotional impact.
With the final chapter approaching, there’s a sense of liberation. Thus, our approach was to pack as many narrative elements, unexpected plot twists, emotional climaxes, and turns as possible into this final season – in essence, delivering a satisfying payoff to our loyal fans for their unwavering support throughout our journey together.
In a playful manner, Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment for The CW, hinted that the final episodes of “Superman & Lois” would be remarkably impressive, and true to his word, the first two episodes were nothing short of spectacular. In the second episode of Season 4, titled “A World Without,” Clark Kent’s wife Lois (Bitsie Tulloch) and their sons Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Jon (Michael Bishop) are left with more than just memories of Superman. Instead, Superman had planned ahead by creating a hologram of himself to interact with the family whenever they visited the Fortress of Solitude. “I’ll always be here at the fortress to help however I can,” the holographic Superman reassured his family. As he looked on, the grieving family was reminded that, out in the world, it would now be up to them to carry on without him. This poignant moment marks the conclusion of the two-episode premiere.
