As a long-time Superman enthusiast who grew up with Lois Lane by my side and spent countless hours poring over comic books, I must say that the recent news about Supergirl’s absence from the season finale of Superman & Lois left me feeling a bit like Clark Kent in a phone booth. It feels like a missed opportunity to bring together two of the most iconic characters in DC Comics lore.
It has been confirmed: Supergirl won’t make an appearance in the final episode of ‘Superman & Lois’. This news, along with some other disappointments, has recently been discussed by actors Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch. Hoechlin, who played Superman in both the Arrowverse and the popular CW series, expressed a desire not to be overly demanding when it comes to his own regrets. However, he did mention that he managed to tick off a couple of items on his wish list for the Superman series. These included the arrival of Lex Luthor (played by Michael Cudlitz) and the Kryptonian killing machine, Doomsday, on the show. According to Hoechlin, during a panel interview (as reported by Screen Rant):
I experienced quite a bit of good fortune, managing to fulfill many of my largest desires. I’m thrilled about these two achievements, especially since I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing them often together.
Contrary to what some fans might expect, actress Bitsie Tulloch, who plays Lois Lane, has shared a significant clue about the series finale: Supergirl will not make an appearance in the final episode. Despite the showrunner Todd Helbing’s explanation that their characters are just doppelgängers of those from the Arrowverse, this news may be disheartening for many fans. Interestingly, Tulloch expresses her own disappointment as Melissa Benoist, who portrays Supergirl, didn’t get a chance to feature in “Superman & Lois”. Tulloch expressed these sentiments during the same interview.
“[I] really wanted Melissa Benoist to show up at some point for a cameo.”
‘Superman & Lois’ Reportedly Ends Without the Woman of Tomorrow
In a recent disclosure by Bitsie Tulloch, it’s been shared that Melissa Benoist, who plays Supergirl, won’t be returning to her role as the Woman of Tomorrow in the final episode of Superman & Lois. Interestingly, due to the Arrowverse/ doppelgängers revelation from showrunner Todd Helbing, even Benoist wasn’t permitted to place a photo of herself, Benoist and Tyler Hoechlin on her character’s desk. Tulloch further shared this detail during an interview with Screen Rant.
I desired to see the photograph located on Lois’s desk at the Daily Planet during the pilot episode. This was around when conversations were taking place about possibly not being connected to the Arrowverse. Since we started on Supergirl, it would have been pleasant to include Melissa.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’ve learned that the decision-makers had nixed the idea of Ruby Rose’s Batwoman appearing in “Superman & Lois” right from the start. Later, Tulloch elaborated:
As a passionate film enthusiast, I embarked on my cinematic journey back in October 2020, which meant navigating stringent COVID-19 protocols. There was an intriguing whisper about potentially merging worlds with Batwoman, but alas, the creative team decided against it, simply saying, “Let’s not.
It seems unlikely that Tulloch is planning a secret cameo by Benoist’s Supergirl, so fans shouldn’t anticipate this unexpected appearance in the final episode of Superman & Lois. Despite the absence of her well-loved character, t Dawn of Justice, when it comes to the character’s origin story.
The series finale of Superman & Lois airs at 8 p.m. EST Monday, Dec. 2 on The CW.
