Superman Producer Lists Off Names Of Actors Who Almost Played The Man Of Steel Instead Of Christopher Reeve, And I’m So Glad With How This Turned Out In The End

As a gamer who grew up watching Christopher Reeve soar through the skies as Superman, I can confidently say that the casting of this legendary hero was nothing short of perfection. The alternate possibilities – from Neil Diamond to Caitlyn Jenner (then Bruce) and Arnold Schwarzenegger – would have undoubtedly resulted in a disaster of epic proportions. Thankfully, the casting team saw the potential in an unknown actor who’d recently starred alongside Katharine Hepburn on Broadway.

1978’s “Superman: The Movie” marked a significant breakthrough for superhero stories, transitioning them from a niche genre into the realm of blockbuster films. This pivotal moment has led to an abundance of upcoming superhero movies that we eagerly anticipate. At the time, Christopher Reeve, then an unknown actor, was chosen to portray Superman, a role he reprised in three additional films. Prior to his casting, several well-known figures were considered for the iconic role. Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful that the casting ultimately went as it did.

Titled “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story“, this compelling documentary about Christopher Reeve’s life was shown under the Fathom Events banner and will soon be available in theaters across North America, starting October 11. Among those interviewed for the documentary was Pierre Spengler, producer of “Superman: The Movie“, who shared insights on the unique process behind casting this groundbreaking superhero film.

In our desperate search, we were scouring for an unidentified Superman. The director had amassed countless potential candidates, scores of them. It was peculiar, even Neil Diamond expressed his desire to play Superman. Robert Redford declined the role as soon as it was offered. Bruce Jenner had the physical prowess, but his acting skills left room for improvement. Schwarzenegger pursued us relentlessly, boasting a physique reminiscent of the comic book character, albeit with an exaggerated Austrian accent, “Truth, justice, and the American way.” We eventually decided against casting a well-known Superman and instead opted for an unknown actor, surrounding him with established stars.

Let’s all concur that we managed to avoid some significant pitfalls. For instance, neither Neil Diamond nor Caitlyn Jenner (then Bruce) were actors, suggesting it wouldn’t be prudent for them to portray a character as iconic in pop culture as they had been for four decades at that time. Arnold Schwarzenegger had made some movie appearances by then, such as “Hercules in New York” and “Stay Hungry,” but Spengler’s point about his heavy Austrian accent being incongruous with the American icon of Superman is convincing. Similarly, I believe Robert Redford, who had already captivated audiences in films like “The Sting” and “Three Days of the Condor,” would have been ill-suited for the role.

6 Ways Christopher Reeve Became A Real-Life Superman

As a gaming enthusiast reminiscing about moments past, I can’t help but recall the time when my dad, Christopher Reeve, appeared at the Oscars following his accident. The memory that lingers most vividly is seeing him take the stage in that wheelchair, his spirit undiminished despite the physical constraints. It was a testament to his indomitable will and resilience, a beacon of hope that still shines brightly within me today.

It’s widely accepted that choosing Christopher Reeve, fresh off his Broadway performance with Katharine Hepburn in “A Matter of Gravity,” was an excellent decision. Just as the tagline for “Superman: The Movie” declared, he managed to make us believe that a man could fly, and even 45 years after its premiere, he remains one of the most cherished actors to embody the Man of Steel. In the documentary, his son, Matthew, highlights a particular scene from “Superman” as his favorite performance by his father.

Additionally, as Pierre Spengler mentioned, having an enigma at the heart of Superman, prominent actors could be recruited to elevate the film’s status, such as Margot Kidder portraying Lois Lane, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, and Marlon Brando in the role of Jor-El. Both Superman and its sequel Superman II (including both the original version and The Richard Donner Cut) were warmly received, but unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, a film that Jon Cryer, who played Lenny Luthor, referred to as a “disaster.” However, Reeve’s enduring image as Superman remains unblemished, so let us remain grateful that he was chosen instead of other potential candidates.
