Superman Wraps Shooting, James Gunn Celebrates With New Cast Photo

As a long-time DC fan and someone who has eagerly awaited the revival of the DC Universe, I must say that the news about James Gunn‘s Superman is nothing short of exhilarating! The fact that principal photography has wrapped up fills me with a sense of anticipation that can only be rivaled by a child on Christmas Eve.

That’s a wrap on James Gunn’s Superman. The new reboot, which stars David Corenswet as the titular Man of Steel, is set to hit theaters in the middle of 2025, and Gunn recently announced that principal photography has officially been completed. The project will kickstart Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe (which just got a shiny new logo at SDCC), as James Gunn and Peter Safran take the reins of the comic book movie studio.

To mark the end of filming, James Gunn posted a picture on social media from the first day of shooting, which is shown below. The image includes Gunn, Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and other cast and crew members, huddled together on a chilly set in Norway. Given that numerous photos from the set have been shared by enthusiastic fans and photographers during the filming in Cleveland, it’s exciting to see a photo released directly by James Gunn.

In the post, Gunn acknowledged everyone who contributed to the making of the Superman film. He described his Superman movie as a story depicting a virtuous individual living in a world not always so virtuous, with the complete caption reading: “Gunn thanks all involved; director describes Superman film as a portrayal of ‘a good man in a less-than-ideal world’.”

As a filmmaker with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that this project has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The commitment, creativity, and sheer determination exhibited by our cast and crew have truly brought this movie to life in ways I never thought possible.

It’s been a privilege for me. Our goal was Superman, but the true treasure has been the hard work, laughter, feelings, thoughts, and imagination we’ve exchanged on set – and for that, I will always be thankful. (Here’s a snapshot from our first week of filming in Svalbard, Norway.)

DC Studios Was Absent From SDCC 2024

Although DC Studios is a significant player in the global comic book media industry, it was surprisingly absent from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, often referred to as the ultimate nerd gathering. While Marvel Studios made a splash in Hall H with fresh glimpses of “Captain America: A New Era” and “Fantastic Four: Initial Footsteps,” and announcing that Robert Downey Jr. will portray Doctor Doom within the MCU, Gunn and DC Studios were conspicuously absent from the event.

At the start of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), DC Studios Co-President Peter Safran explained why DC wouldn’t be participating in the world’s largest comic book event. It has been approximately a year since Gunn unveiled his fresh plans for the DC Universe, and both parties decided that it was premature to present a comprehensive showcase at SDCC. In other words, they felt it was too soon to make a big reveal at this specific convention.

“From my perspective, it’s just too soon. A year is truthfully a long time for a campaign and so, from our perspective, I think we go stronger and harder over a shorter period, rather than stretching it out. That’s our instinct on that. Believe me, there’s gonna be no shortage of Superman in your life over the next 12 months.”

“Superman is set to soar onto movie screens on July 11, 2025. Here’s a sneak peek from director James Gunn.”
