They can’t help themselves.
Regardless of the scale, financial resources, or anticipation, celebrities need to demonstrate their commitment to progressivism in media interviews. This applies even for projects that could be the pinnacle of their career.
Recently, we witnessed Rachel Zegler critically and harshly comment on a cherished Disney intellectual property, which led to the disappointing performance of “Snow White” at the box office earlier this year.
Is it “Superman’s” turn?
Initially, actor David Corenswet modified the traditional all-American catchphrase for his character during an interview, further demonstrating how Hollywood often strays from Superman’s Midwestern identity. In a conversation with “CBS This Morning,” the star rephrased the famous line, “truth, justice, and the American way,” while discussing the project.
Regarding the controversial scene featuring Lois interviewing Superman as Clark Kent, Corenswet explained, “This scene, I believe, encapsulates the essence of the character. The truth is, when Superman isn’t required to be a strong, comforting figure for the public, or to represent safety, security, truth, and justice – all those positive ideals, he continues to uphold these values privately.
For quite a while now, Hollywood has grappled with this term, even manifesting in the less-than-successful 2006 remake titled “Superman Returns.
Currently, filmmaker James Gunn is crafting his eagerly awaited reboot with a focus on the theme of immigration. Notably, this announcement follows recent polls indicating that many Americans endorse President Donald Trump’s firm approach towards combating illegal immigration.
It’d be wise to steer clear of political discussions when promoting a movie. Couldn’t be simpler!
Avoid making unwise choices, especially by taking a stance on the “incorrect” side of an issue as your movie is mere days from premiere – July 11.
Gunn ignored both positions in a new interview with The Times of London.
Gunn expresses that Superman symbolizes America for him, representing an immigrant who enriched the nation. However, he emphasizes that it’s primarily a tale advocating for basic human decency, a value he believes we’ve strayed from. He wonders if the film’s interpretation might differ between states like New York, which could be seen as Metropolis, and Kansas, where Clark Kent originated. Gunn acknowledges that it may resonate differently, but notes there will always be individuals who misinterpret kindness as offensive. But he doesn’t care about them.
Gunn also downplayed Superman’s all-American roots.
“He is a hero for the world.”
Gunn has often found himself embroiled in debates. His off-color humor led to a temporary suspension from helming “Guardians of the Galaxy 3”. Previously, he likened President Donald Trump to Hitler and Putin, expressing indifference if his views affected his earnings at the box office.
At a particularly inopportune time, he introduces radical leftist ideology into the multimillion-dollar promotional efforts for the movie. Given that the entire DC Comics reboot hinges on this film’s success, Gunn seems more focused on expressing his political views rather than contemplating the potential ramifications.
As a devoted cinephile, if “Superman” fails to impress at the box office this weekend, I might find myself reconsidering my previous thoughts on how my opinions could affect its ticket sales.
