There’s been great excitement for the Nintendo Switch since it was first released, and many folks are eagerly awaiting the arrival of its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2.
Despite many being thrilled, some initial Nintendo Switch users wonder for how long the company intends to continue supporting the console. In fact, Nintendo has no plans to abandon its player base without proper support.
Support for the Original Nintendo Switch
Based on information from a recent conference call by Sankei, as reported by VGC, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has indicated that the upcoming Switch 2 may not significantly affect the ongoing sales of the original Nintendo Switch.
Additionally, it’s been verified that the corporation intends to sustain the initial Switch console for an extended duration following the release of the Switch 2, contingent upon user demand.
The #3 Best-Selling Game Console of All Time
Despite being eight years old, the Nintendo Switch has shown remarkable resilience, maintaining its relevance since its debut. Even during the recent holiday season, sales of the original Switch reached an impressive 4.82 million units, and the console is now nearing a total sale of over 150 million units.
Compared to the other two leading consoles, the one you’re referring to has been outperformed by the Nintendo DS (approximately 154 million units sold) and the record-breaking PlayStation 2 (over 160 million units sold).
The longevity of the Nintendo Switch isn’t entirely clear, but one theory is that its success may be due to Nintendo targeting a broader audience beyond traditional gamers. This includes groups such as the elderly, who might not typically consider themselves gamers.
What Do We Know about the Nintendo Switch 2?
To date, many aspects of the Nintendo Switch 2 remain unclear, but based on the trailer revealed last month, there are only a few certainties for fans. Firstly, it’s confirmed that the Switch 2 will be larger than its predecessor; secondly, the joy-cons will not be magnetically attached to the device as they were in the original model, likely preventing the issue of degradation over time.
It’s suggested as well that the joy-cons in Switch 2 might have a mouse mode, potentially allowing it to run keyboard-and-mouse games. Additionally, the console’s ability to lie flat could be for imitating a laptop setup, giving players a more familiar gaming experience.
So far, it’s only fan conjecture; Nintendo is anticipated to present a comprehensive reveal at their Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April.
Many people are eagerly anticipating that the upcoming Switch 2 will boost the console’s power significantly, allowing for a wider range of AAA-level games. They don’t expect it to rival the power of the Xbox Series X|S or PS5, but they hope it can at least compete with the Steam Deck in terms of capabilities.
As of now, there’s no confirmed launch date for the Nintendo Switch 2, but enthusiasts can look forward to learning more about the device during Nintendo Direct 2025, scheduled for April 2nd.
