At the close of Season 2 of Yellowjackets, viewers realized that Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) had managed to make it through. As the cabin ignited, his back was visible watching as the girls scrambled out in a panic. It appeared he was responsible for setting the fire, although he maintained his innocence, stating he wasn’t involved with it.

The initial episodes of Season 3 explore the survival story of Coach Ben, hinting at his possible ill health. This is due to the fact that we see him exiting the same cave where Javi (Luciano Leroux) had been hiding during his disappearance. It’s puzzling how he could have survived without essential supplies like food and water, more so considering that his lower leg was amputated, making it difficult for him to hunt or use weapons effectively.

Coach Ben’s Resourcefulness Helped Him Survive

As I sat down to watch the latest episodes, I couldn’t help but wonder if poor Ben had met his end in those harsh woods. The ladies seemed certain he’d either starved or frozen, yet no one had found a trace of him. Little did they know, though, that I was holding my breath as I watched, hoping against hope that Ben was somehow still alive and managing to stay hidden.
Every time the ladies ventured into the woods, I found myself clenching the armrests, expecting them to stumble upon him. But alas, it seemed he had a knack for avoiding them at every turn. He was making his way through the forest on makeshift crutches, managing to catch food with snares along the way.
It was hard not to notice that those snares never seemed to be discovered by the ladies, though it struck me as odd when Natalie stumbled upon one and decided not to reveal it. It felt like she was trying to protect Coach Ben from their wrath, keeping his secret hidden.

Striking gold when he encounters something difficult buried beneath him, he taps his cane against it and recognizes that it’s no ordinary stone. After clearing away the foliage and soil, he uncovers an entrance to a colossal underground chamber. Inside, there was a metallic box with the letters “KUH” engraved on it. Upon opening it, he found a flashlight, military-grade ready-to-eat meals, and assorted survival items of every kind.

In my opinion, the fervent manner Ben devours a peanut protein bar hints at a prolonged hunger. Scavenging for fresh water may be simpler, but edible resources appear scarce indeed. Miraculously, he extricates himself from the pit and fastens the case to his person, allowing him to haul it back to the cave. There, the case becomes his sole sustenance during his absence.

Something Is Clearly Wrong With Coach Ben in ‘Yellowjackets’

Although Coach Ben has managed to secure shelter and supplies, he’s not in a good state. He’s been living alone for quite some time, possibly even several months. When Mari (Alexa Barajas) stumbles into a pit that Ben had set up for an animal, she is petrified at the sight of him. Just as he usually does, he guides her in resetting her dislocated knee and helps her out of the hole. However, he has no intention of letting her go free.

He knocks her unconscious and takes her back to the cave with him, fearful she might reveal his existence to other women. Curious as to why he’s acting so anxious if he denies responsibility for the fire, Mari queries him. He responds, “Truth? It wouldn’t make a difference to that crowd.” Admittedly, he acknowledges they murdered and consumed Javi. “And you honestly think I wouldn’t be next?” he inquires. Mari’s silence communicates volumes. Ben feels a complex mix of emotions towards her – desire to protect her but unable to let her go. He offers her hot cocoa, which she drinks voraciously, marveling at his access to such indulgences and pondering their source. Yet, in this very moment, her mind is diverted by something unsettling.

She turns to find Ben standing in a secluded spot, having a heated conversation with an apparent individual – however, it seems no one else is present. He expresses his frustration to this unseen person, stating he’s trying to keep someone quiet, needs some time to ponder, and requests they cease their actions. His exclamation, “That’s enough!” implies that he might just be engaging in a one-sided dialogue.

It’s been proposed that his current experiences might be hallucinations, where he believes he’s interacting with his boyfriend Paul (Francois Arnaud), a scenario Ben found himself in during Season 2 when he was severely affected by trauma and food scarcity. Another possibility is that he’s conversing with the same individual or supernatural force that Javi, a character who passed away in Season 2, referred to as a “friend” who urged him not to return.

The early stages of Ben’s mental breakdown are apparent, triggered by his relentless solitude, the weighty predicament, persistent dread for his safety, and scarcity of sustenance and hydration. It seems that the enigmatic qualities of the wilderness may have contributed to Javi behaving oddly, Tai (Jasmine Savoy Brown) experiencing hallucinations and sleepwalking, and everyone else hearing the trees seem to scream. Could this unknown entity or figure be responsible for igniting the fire, or perhaps manipulating Ben into a trance and using him as an instrument?

Fears for Coach Ben’s Future in ‘Yellowjackets’

The fascination surrounding Ben’s current situation and his continued existence lies in the fact that Ben is one of the rare individuals from the wilderness whose fate remains uncertain. There’s no clear evidence that he’s alive today, yet there’s also nothing definitive to prove he isn’t. In flashback sequences, Misty (Samantha Hanratty) deduces that Natalie might have information about Ben’s whereabouts and confides this in Shauna (Sophie Nelisse), who pleads with her not to share it with anyone else.

It’s just a matter of time before Mari manages an escape or the women locate Ben. Their thirst for retribution might lead to a chilling predicament. It’s hard for viewers to fathom how Ben endures in his circumstances. He seems to be vastly outmatched, moves slowly, and shows signs of mental distress.

For those who have kept up with the trailers for Season 3, there’s a scene where Ben appears to be in peril, shown by his terrified scream. This moment might just be a decoy, implying an injury or mental distress instead of harm inflicted by the women. With no additional information, it’s only a tantalizing hint. Generally speaking, the scenario that seems most plausible is that Ben is discovered by the ladies, and unfortunately for him, he becomes their next target.

If that’s true, such an event could mark a significant shift for women in this scenario. Previously, their resorting to cannibalism was only out of necessity. However, with Jackie (Ella Purnell), it seemed as if the wilderness was pushing them towards this act by failing to burn her body properly, instead slowly cooking it through a combination of fire and snow.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I find myself reflecting on a chilling scene where the characters’ actions raise serious ethical questions. The death of Javi could possibly have been avoided, and the pursuit of Natalie was nothing short of petrifying – a disheartening low point. However, it’s important to remember that both women were in dire straits, having gone without food for some time. In their struggle for survival, they were driven by instincts as primal as those of any wild animal.

With the vibrant spring unfolding and summer on the horizon, it seems plausible that they could easily catch wild game or locate alternative food sources to keep them well-nourished. But if they resorted to killing and consuming Ben without a genuine need for sustenance, their actions would indicate a descent into sheer barbarity.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been intrigued by the suspenseful mystery unfolding in “Yellowjackets” on Paramount+ with Showtime. The story revolves around Ben, a character who has mysteriously disappeared and reappeared. If his boyfriend suspects, and he’s still out there, he could be the one tormenting them. But here’s the twist: it might as well be Ben himself, miraculously rescued, choosing to cut ties with everyone until now.

For the moment, Ben clings to life through sheer determination and a dash of fortune. The question hanging in the air is whether Coach Ben will survive this ordeal, or if he’s met his end. If he does manage to pull through, what he transforms into could be even more chilling than anything we’ve seen so far. So, grab your popcorn and tune in to “Yellowjackets” on Paramount+ with Showtime to unravel the secrets of this captivating series.
